Central enshrines ex-G-Prep coach
Terry Kelly, a former Gonzaga Prep coach and All-American at Central Washington University, was inducted into the CWU Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Kelly was a cross country and track standout at Central from 1968-71, earning NAIA All-America honors in both sports.
He had a third-place national finish in the steeplechase in 1969. His career-best time in the event, 9 minutes, 0.8 seconds, remains the second-best mark in school history. In 1970, he placed 23rd in the NAIA cross country championships to earn All-America recognition and lead the Wildcats to a sixth-place team finish.
Joining Kelly in the 2010 hall of fame class are former Wildcats football and baseball coach Mike Dunbar, women’s soccer standout Melissa Sawyer and the 1970 baseball team.
Baseball
The 31st All-State feeder games in Spokane are scheduled for June 2-3 at Shadle Park’s A.K. Jackson Field. The committee that puts on the event is looking for area high school coaches to nominate deserving seniors.
Players from 4A through B classifications will participate in three games, after which the names of 10 players will be forwarded to the All-State committee, which will select players for the annual All-Star Games in Yakima on June 12-13.
Feeder games will pit the Class B team against a 2A-1A team at 3:30 p.m. on June 2, followed by B vs. 4A-3A at 6 p.m. The final game in the series, at 3:30 p.m. on June 3, will match the 2A-1A team against the 4A-3A team.

Basketball
Stefan Buratto of Sandpoint, the Inland Empire League 4A player of the year last season, has signed with Carroll College, the Helena school announced.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Buratto, who averaged 24 points and eight rebounds a game, was All-IEL and All-North Idaho. He had games of 42 and 35 points. His parents are former Carroll athletes.
•Two North Idaho College men’s players have signed with four-year schools.
BJ Shearry, a 6-foot-6 forward/guard from Boise, who was a second-team All-Scenic West Athletic Conference selection, has signed with UC Riverside. He averaged 9.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game last season.
Taylor Stevens, a 6-7 forward/guard from Seattle, an All-SWAC honorable mention, signed with Seattle University. He averaged 8.9 points.
•Jake Owsley, a 6-7 senior from Bozeman, who averaged 12.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game last season, has signed with North Idaho College.
•Seven area teams, including five that swept all the high school division titles, won championships in the 24th annual Best in the West girls AAU tournament in Yakima last weekend that drew 187 teams.

Northwest Blazers, ninth grade, defeated Mt. Spokane Shock 58-34 – Kendalyn Brainard, Alisha Breen, Diondra Denton, Morgan Douglas, Pele Gianotti, Molly McIntyre, Kelsey Moos, Jade Redmon, Brooke Reilly, Natahnee Spencer, Karlee Wilson. Coach: Steve Klees.

Sonic Locomotives, sixth grade blue (top division), defeated Puget Sound Flight Blue 45-38 – Bria Bowton, Shafali Byrd, Alex Chambers, Megan Dean, Payton Douglass, Cierra Dvorak, Megan Nilsson, Jenna Place. Coaches: Zane Troester and Sean Chambers.
Bowling
The Spokane Bowling Association Hall of Fame added four members during induction ceremonies on April 24.
Sean Heath and Rob Cline, who each average more than 220 a game and have numerous 800 series and 300 games to their credit, were inducted in the superior performance category.
Elzya Jordan and Pat Howard were added for meritorious service.
College scene
Katie Griffith, a sophomore at Trinity University in San Antonio, from Ferris, has received an invitation to the NCAA Division III women’s tennis national championships May 28-30 in Fredericksburg, Va.
Griffith has a 17-11 record in singles for the Tigers this school year, following a 4-1 mark in the fall with a 13-10 spring record. She is 12-3 against D-III opponents and is ranked No. 6 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region.
•Three former area athletes have been named to Great Northwest Athletic Conference academic all-star teams in track and field.
Anthony Zackery, a Western Washington senior from Ferris with a 3.93 grade-point average, is on the men’s team. Selected to the women’s team are two Northwest Nazarene athletes, Ashley Morman, a senior from Bonners Ferry with a 3.97 GPA, who was honored for a third straight year, and Amanda Konzal, a sophomore from Mt. Spokane with a 3.99 GPA.
•Kevin Schneider, a Central Washington senior third baseman from Mead, and Cody Reeves, Western Oregon’s senior first baseman from Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls, received honorable mention on the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference baseball team.
•Four former area high school athletes – two men and two women – have been named to All-Frontier Conference golf teams.
Selected to the men’s team were Lewis-Clark State College junior Ben House and freshman Kyler Nilsson, both from Lewiston. The women’s team includes LCSC senior Sue James from Kellogg and Great Falls junior Chelsea Kenner from Post Falls.
Golf
Branden Dalton, North Idaho College’s freshman NJCAA All-American from Reno, Nev., has signed a letter of intent with Washington State, Cardinals coach Randy Boswell announced.
Dalton was all-state all four years of high school and was state champion his senior year as well as a two-time Nevada junior state champion.
“Branden is the best golfer we have had since we started the program five years ago,” Boswell said.
•Ed Burke of Hayden Lake Country Club has been elected new vice president of Zone 5 in the Pacific Northwest Golf Association.
Kent Brown of Dominion Meadows in Colville is vice president of Zone 2.
Hockey
The three Spokane Americans Youth Hockey Association teams that played in national championships after winning state titles in an unprecedented showing for the organization brought home top-five trophies.
The Midget U-18 Jr. Chiefs, who played in New York, and the PeeWee U-12 AA team, which was in Virginia, both earned bronze medals for placing third.
The Midget U-16 team, which played in Pennsylvania, placed fifth.
•Dustin Pierce, who played for the SAYHA Midget U-18 team, has received a commitment to play for the Creston Thundercats in the Kootenai International Junior Hockey League next season, the Jr. Chiefs announced.
Soccer
Amanda Swenson, a former Cheney High and Community Colleges of Spokane standout, has signed a letter of intent with Eastern Oregon, her family announced.
Swenson was the offensive MVP at CCS as a sophomore following the 2008 season.
Tennis
Ethan Vaughn, a senior at Mead who is unbeaten in Washington prep singles this season, has signed a letter of intent with Montana, Grizzlies coach Kris Nord announced.
Vaughn has played in the Washington state high school championships the past three years and has been ranked as high as seventh in the Pacific Northwest U.S. Tennis Association rankings in club competition.
