Extended FIU’s Garrett Wittels extended his NCAA-leading hitting streak to 44 games, getting a single in the third inning against South Alabama. Wittels is one game shy of matching Arizona State’s Roger Schmuck for the third-longest streak in Division I history. Schmuck had a 45-game streak in 1971. Wittels is within 14 games of matching Robin Ventura’s record 58-game hit streak for Oklahoma State in 1987. Wichita State’s Phil Stephenson had a 47-game streak in 1981.

Released NASCAR driver Brian Vickers has been released from the hospital, where he was treated for blood clots in his legs and near his lungs. Red Bull Racing says its driver was released Friday night from a Washington hospital. He was admitted Wednesday. Red Bull Racing says Vickers’ return to racing is uncertain. He will not race this weekend at Dover International Speedway.

Worsening Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum says his injured knee gradually is getting worse, although he plans to keep playing on his swelling leg in the Western Conference finals. Bynum disclosed his right knee’s worsening state after running in practice with the Lakers, who open the conference finals against Phoenix on Monday night. Bynum discovered a small tear in his meniscus after straining his knee during the Lakers’ first-round series with Oklahoma City. Bynum took most of the past four days off to rest before the conference finals.

Confirmed Golfer Tiger Woods’ former swing coach confirmed in a TV interview that Woods underwent counseling for sex addiction during his competitive absence, also offering a strong refutation to any suggestion that Woods has used performance- enhancing drugs. Hank Haney, in his first prolonged interview since Monday’s decision to leave Woods’ employ, made the disclosures in a segment set to air today on the Golf Channel at 3 p.m.

Ruled Boxing promoter Don King says he has won a judge’s temporary ruling that is keeping former welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga from fighting in a mixed martial arts match. King claimed Mayorga breached their contract by trying to fight the MMA match. Mayorga’s fight with Din Thomas in Fayetteville, N.C., was canceled Saturday night.
