Huskies take lead
The top-seeded Washington men shot an opening-round 2-under-par 286 Thursday for a five-shot lead at the NCAA West Regional at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton, Wash.
Darren Wallace’s 2-under 70 led the Huskies, who received even-par rounds from Charlie Hughes, Richard Lee and Nick Taylor. UW’s Chris Williams (Moscow High) shot 73.
Colorado State’s Dustin Morris and Denver’s Espen Kofstad are tied for first, one shot ahead of Wallace. Morris’ Rams are tied with Oregon State for second.
Washington State’s Kevin Tucker is tied for 51st at 78.
•North Idaho’s women’s team finished tied for 13th in the 17-team field during the NJCAA Championship at the LPGA International at Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Cardinals shot a third-round 364 to finish at 1,110.
Ashley Burke led the way for NIC, finishing in 58th place at 49-over 265. Amanda Wemple placed 62nd at 273 and had the Cardinals’ best round of the tournament, an 86, on the final day.
Daytona (Fla.) State College dominated the field, shooting 869 for a 60-shot gap on McLennan (Texas) CC. Daytona had six golfers in the top eight, including champion Mitsuki Katahira (211).
