In brief: Free class offered on sleep apnea
COEUR D’ALENE – Dr. Michael Coats, medical director of Kootenai Health’s Sleep Disorders Center, will speak on sleep apnea at Kootenai Medical Center on Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The free presentation will give information about the disorder and how to treat it.

Museum presents ‘Journey Stories’
BONNERS FERRY – John Bieter, history professor at Boise State University, will be the main speaker on “Journey Stories,” a traveling Smithsonian exhibit, at the Boundary County Museum, 7229 Main St., on Friday at 7 p.m.
Bieter will join musicians Tom and Laura Kitchen at the “Black Tie and Blue Jean” opening program for the exhibit.

NIC tech program named runner-up
COEUR D’ALENE – North Idaho College’s computer applications and technology program was named Idaho’s 2010 Postsecondary Professional-Technical Education Exemplary Program runner-up.
The statewide award from the Idaho State Division of Professional-Technical Education is designed to showcase the top programs in postsecondary institutions.
Business students go to competition
COEUR D’ALENE – North Idaho College student members of the Business Professionals of America recently attended the annual national leadership conference, “Shoot for Success,” in Anaheim, Calif. At the conference, NIC students participated in business skill competitions, workshops, general sessions and national officer candidate campaigns and elections, and they came home with top honors.
Students who received awards at the national conference include: Joe Ingalls, of Post Falls, first place in Graphic Design Promotion; Danielle Lockwood, of Sandpoint, and Lillie Neff, of Coeur d’Alene, first place in the Video Production Team category; Victoria Day, of Post Falls, second place in Human Resources and third place in Administrative Support Team; Stacee Pettis, of Spokane, third place in Fundamental Spreadsheets and third place in Administrative Support Team; Robert Rosin, of Bonners Ferry, third place in Administrative Support Team and top-10 medalist in Advanced Word Processing; Melanie Orr, of Coeur d’Alene, national officer candidate; and Nurbek Jumayev, of Coeur d’Alene, top-10 medalist in Entrepreneurship.
Day, Pettis, Rosin and Orr were honored at a special reception for students receiving the Ambassador Torch Award for the highest level of service and dedication. In addition, BPA Adviser Kathie O’Brien was inducted into the Business Professionals of America Hall of Fame.
Kootenai Health wins repeat award
COEUR D’ALENE – Kootenai Health was awarded the Exceeding Patient Expectations Award and was ranked in the top 20 percent of participating health care facilities by Avatar International Inc., a firm that annually surveys U.S. health care facilities.
This is the eighth year in a row Kootenai Health has won the award. Criteria focused on how patients rated the center in categories, including quality of care, reliability and individualization of treatment plans.
