In brief: Deng’s career night knocks off Portland
NBA: Luol Deng scored a career-high 40 points to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 110-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.
Deng scored 16 points in the first and third quarters and shot 14-of-19 from the floor in the game. He passed his previous career best of 38 with a 3-pointer from the corner with 5:48 to play.
Derrick Rose, who entered the game as the NBA’s leading scorer, added 16 points and 12 assists for Chicago (2-1).
The Trail Blazers entered the game 3-0, with all three of their victories coming as a result of fourth-quarter comebacks. Portland outscored opponents 85-49 in the final quarters of its first three games.
• Horford agrees to $60 million extension with Hawks: The Atlanta Hawks agreed to a five-year, $60 million contract extension with All-Star center Al Horford.
Last season, the Atlanta player averaged career highs in points (14.2) and rebounds (9.9) while becoming the first Hawks draft pick to make the All-Star Game since Kevin Willis in 1992. Horford finished eighth in shooting percentage (.551) and also was among the top 10 in rebounding.
College Basketball: Duke’s Kyle Singler is the leading vote-getter on the Associated Press preseason All-America team while North Carolina’s Harrison Barnes is the first freshman selected since voting began 24 years ago.
Jacob Pullen of Kansas State, Jimmer Fredette of BYU and JaJuan Johnson of Purdue are the other members of the team announced.
• Iowa won’t be penalized in Kutcher-recruit flap: Iowa says the NCAA won’t penalize the Hawkeyes for allowing two basketball recruits to meet celebrity fans Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore.
The school said that the NCAA ruled the actions by Iowa staffers were “secondary” in nature and both unintentional and accidental.
Penguins’ Staal out
NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jordan Staal, expected to return this week after missing 12 games with an infection in his right foot, will need surgery to repair a broken right hand and will be out for up to six weeks.
Staal, who planned to make his season debut Wednesday at Dallas, was practicing on the No. 2 line with Tyler Kennedy and Mike Comrie when he grimaced in pain after being struck by a puck. He was favoring his right hand as he left the ice.
• Flyers’ Briere suspended 3 games: Flyers forward Danny Briere has been suspended three games by the NHL for his crosscheck of the Islanders’ Frans Nielsen on Saturday.
Briere’s crosscheck of Nielsen with one minute left in the game sparked the final melee in a fight-filled game.
Lopes leaves Phils
MLB: Davey Lopes has informed the Philadelphia Phillies he won’t return as first-base coach, the club said.
Lopes, a former Spokane Indian, spent the last four seasons with the Phillies, and played a significant role in the team’s success in stealing bases. Under Lopes, the Phillies led the league in stolen-base percentage four straight seasons.
