Second-ranked Carroll advances with win

John Camino ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns and Gary Wagner completed nine of 16 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns as Carroll College defeated Azusa Pacific 35-21 in a first round NAIA football playoff game Saturday in Helena.

Second-ranked Carroll (11-0) used two big plays in the second half to break open a tight game to stop No. 18 Azusa Pacific (6-4).

Ryan Egan returned a kickoff 76 yards about midway through the third quarter and, with the extra point, put the Saints up 28-21.

With 2:46 left in the game, Wagner connected with Corey Peterson with a 59 yard scoring pass to make it 35-21.

Johnell Murphy rushed 21 times for 91 yards and a touchdown for Azusa Pacific, while John van den Raadt completed 14 of 21 passes for 198 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Azusa Pacific also lost two fumbles, while Carroll turned the ball over only once with an interception.

Carroll had 421 yards of offense compared to Azusa Pacific’s 339.

Linfield 42, Cal Lutheran 26: Simon Lamson ran for four touchdowns as the Wildcats (9-1) of the Northwest Conference defeated the Kingsmen (8-2) in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. Linfield will travel to Minnesota to play St. Thomas (11-0) in the second round.
