Harmful algae blooms found in Hauser Lake
Fri., Oct. 1, 2010
Blue-green algae blooms have been detected in Hauser Lake, and people should avoid areas of algae growth along the shorelines.
The algae blooms look like scum or blue-green mats on the water. They can produce harmful toxins, according to the Panhandle Health District and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality. Children and pets are particularly susceptible to exposure.
Drinking or swimming in water with high levels of the toxins can produce stomachache, liver damage, skin rashes and allergic reactions. If those symptoms occur, individuals should seek medical care.
Current water and weather conditions are favorable for algae blooms, officials said.
