Prep roundup: Mead keeps pace in GSL with victory

Kaely Kight finished with a match-high 17 kills and added six blocks, while Kuulei Zalopany notched 22 digs and three aces as Mead (6-1) stayed a game back in the loss column behind Mt. Spokane in the Greater Spokane League standings with a 3-1 victory over University (3-4) at U-Hi.

The Panthers used late runs in the first two sets to pull away after being tied 15-15 in both games, nailing down the victory with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.

In other GSL matches, Malea Webb finished with 24 assists and four aces and Mercedes Montoya added 10 kills as Lewis and Clark (3-4) swept Shadle Park (3-4) 26-24, 25-18, 25-15 at LC. Kendall Vesneske led the Highlanders with six kills, nine assists and three blocks.

• Great Northern: Shaniqua Nilles had 10 kills and Aaliyah Ashley-Meek added 30 assists as West Valley (5-0) swept Clarkston (3-3) to stay atop the GNL standings in Clarkston. The Bantams had game points in the opening two sets but could not close out the wins, allowing the Eagles to win 27-25, 27-25, 25-18. … Jenny Nakata tallied 10 kills and 14 digs and Shelby Cheslek added seven blocks as Pullman (5-0) overcame a first set that saw the Greyhounds struggle to a 25-22 win, to sweep East Valley (4-3) with 25-16, 25-12 wins in the second and third sets in Pullman. … Kimmie Brazington led with 13 digs and six kills and Deer Park (1-4) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to beat Medical Lake (1-6) 3-1 in ML. Jessica Baier had 16 digs to lead the Cardinals.

• IEL: Talia Chandler had 11 kills and Taylor Charles and Becca Papineau each had 17 assists to lead Moscow to a 23-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-23 win over Lake City in Moscow.

• Intermountain: Marlee Masterson tallied 16 kills and Tia Asbury added 21 digs as St. Maries (6-0) swept host Timberlake (4-4) 3-0 in Spirit Lake. Jen Munson led the Tigers with nine kills, three aces and a block in the loss. … Shayna Waechter had 10 kills and three aces and Samantha Squires added 22 digs as Kellogg (5-2) edged Priest River (2-5) 3-2 in Kellogg.

Girls soccer

• Great Northern: Hannah Bowerman scored both goals in regulation for East Valley, including the tying goal in the 66th minute, and the Knights (8-4, 7-1) outscored Pullman (8-3-1, 6-2) 5-4 in the shootout to win 3-2 in Pullman. With the win, the Knights, who have won their last six, take sole possession of first place in the GNL with four matches remaining. … Brittney Mauro scored a pair of goals to start the second half and Gale Gallaher added two assists as West Valley (5-5-1, 5-3) shut out Clarkston (0-10-1, 0-6-1) 3-0 in Clarkston. … Alison Ruygrok scored the first two goals of the match for Deer Park (4-6-1, 3-4-1) to spark a 7-0 victory over Medical Lake (2-9, 1-8) in Medical Lake.

• Idaho 4A Region 1: Sandpoint (4-6-3) scored three goals in the second half, winning 5-1 to eliminate Lakeland (2-8-2) from the postseason in Sandpoint. The Bulldogs will play Moscow on Thursday, with the winner advancing to the state tournament.

Boys soccer

• Idaho 5A Region 1: Adam Garmin had a goal in each half and Coeur d’Alene (11-3-2) blanked Lewiston (2-11) 3-0 in the opening round of the regional tournament in CdA. The Vikings will host Lake City in the regional final at 2 p.m. Saturday, with both teams advancing to the state tournament. The Bengals were eliminated from the postseason.
