Area roundup: Boyle paces field at INC
The Gonzaga cross country teams took an individual title and two second-place team finishes as Chris Boyle won the men’s race at the Inland Northwest Challenge hosted by Eastern Washington Saturday in Cheney.
Boyle’s time of 24 minutes, 35.6 seconds paced the 8,000-meter men’s race and helped the Bulldogs finish second with 62 points. Calgary (32 points) won the title. Washington State was third with 84 points, led by Andrew Gonzales’ third-place finish.
The Bulldogs also finished second behind Calgary in the 5,000-meter women’s race, tallying 63 points behind Laura Volcheff’s sixth-place finish in 18:31.2. Individual winner Amy Kolin of EWU finished in 18:10.1, beating Calgary’s Faye Stenning by 17.5 seconds. The Eagles finished third in the team standings with 93 points.
Whitworth’s Joy Shufeldt (18:25) finished in fourth and the Pirates took fourth in both team rankings.
• Junior Jono Lafler led Washington State in 24:35.5 to finish 52nd in the Pre-Nationals Meet at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Cougars placed 23rd in the 8,000-meter men’s race. The women took 34th on the 5,000-meter course.
• Lauren Schaffer took 13th overall and 11th among collegiate runners in 20:48.56 to lead Idaho to a third-place finish at the Dellinger Invitational in Eugene, Ore. The Vandals tallied 74 points, with four runners finishing in the top 20.
In the men’s race, the Vandals took fourth with 123 points, led by Markus Geiger’s 15th-place finish in 24:16.80 in the 8,000-meter men’s race.
Women’s soccer
Whitworth outshot Pacific Lutheran (2-9-1, 2-6-1) 29-1, but the Pirates (10-3-1, 8-1-1), who lead the Northwest Conference standings, could not find the net in regulation and two overtime periods and finished in a 0-0 tie in Parkland.
• Lindsey Field drilled an unassisted goal from 20 yards out in the 65th minute to lift Treasure Valley CC (3-9-2, 2-6-1) to a 1-0 victory over Community Colleges of Spokane (8-3-1, 5-3-1) in NWAACC play at Spokane Falls CC.
CCS outshot TVCC 8-5 but was stymied by Chukars keeper Abby Huston, who notched five saves.
Men’s soccer
Chad Kearns scored the first of two first-half goals and Pacific Lutheran (7-5-1, 6-2) held on to blank Whitworth (7-4-1, 4-3-1) 2-0 in Northwest Conference play in Parkland, Wash.
• Hector Pinto scored a goal and assisted on another as Treasure Valley CC (6-5-3, 5-2-2) erased a 1-0 deficit by scoring three consecutive goals to beat CC Spokane (8-4-2, 5-2-1) 3-1 at SFCC. Andrew Mastronardi scored in the 39th minute to give CCS an early 1-0 lead.
Volleyball
In a battle for first place in the Northwest Conference, Natalie Monro finished with 22 kills and Jackie Harvey added 16 as Puget Sound (14-4, 9-1) edged Whitworth (11-6, 8-2) by taking the final set 17-15 in a 3-2 victory in Spokane.
Four Pirates finished with double-digit kills, led by Amanda Grumbach’s 16 and 14 from Kaimi Rocha. The see-saw battle went deep into the fifth set before the Loggers ended the match with three consecutive points.
• Alix Klineman had 15 kills and a .522 hitting percentage, giving her 47 over the weekend, as No. 2 Stanford (16-1, 7-1) swept Pac-10 foe Washington State (6-11, 0-7) 25-13, 25-15, 25-10 in Stanford, Calif.
The Cougars were led by 12 kills from Meagan Ganzer but were held to a .067 hitting percentage by the Cardinal.
• Tarah Murrey finished with 19 kills and 14 digs to lead No. 6 California (17-1, 7-1) to a sweep of No. 7 Washington (15-3, 4-3) 25-22, 25-22, 25-17 in Pac-10 play in Berkeley, Calif.
• Jasmine Rankins led a trio of players to finish with double-digit kills with 13 and Loyola Marymount (12-8, 4-1) handed Gonzaga (2-20, 0-6) its 18th consecutive loss with a 3-0 sweep in WCC play in Los Angeles. LMU held the Bulldogs to 27 kills in the match.
• Kelly Arnold had 20 kills and 17 digs and Ashley Lichtenberg added 17 kills as Northern Colorado (16-5, 7-1) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat Eastern Washington (4-14, 3-5) 3-2 in Big Sky action in Cheney.
• Kayleigh Giddens tallied a match-high 18 kills and added 10 digs as New Mexico State (12-9, 6-1) edged Idaho (10-10, 5-4) 3-2 in WAC play in Las Cruces, NM.
The Vandals, led by Allison Walker’s 18 kills and 11 digs, held a 2-0 lead in the match but dropped the final three sets, including a 15-8 loss in the fifth set.
• After winning its first two matches of bracket play, CC Spokane (25-7) defeated Tacoma CC 25-14, 22-25, 15-11 in the championship match to win the Clark Crossover in Vancouver, Wash. Brigitte Lowe had 21 kills on the day, including 13 with no errors in the title match. Karin Gamache added eight blocks for the day.
• North Idaho (20-5) beat College of Southern Idaho 3-2 in SWAC play in Coeur d’Alene.
Hockey
Jesse Collins and Uriah Machuga supplied the scoring in the first two periods and Garrett Barr completed back-to-back shutouts as the Spokane Braves (9-6) blanked Nelson (5-8) 2-0 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play in Nelson, British Columbia.
