Signed Forward Jerry Stackhouse joined the Miami Heat on Saturday, one day after the NBA championship hopefuls learned that they’ll be without injured swingman Mike Miller until possibly January. Stackhouse, who turns 36 next month, averaged 8.5 points in 42 games as a reserve with the Milwaukee Bucks last season.

Died U.S. national swimming team member Fran Crippen died during a race in the United Arab Emirates. The 26-year-old swimmer from suburban Philadelphia was competing in the FINA Open Water 10-kilometer World Cup in Fujairah, south of Dubai, but he failed to finish and was found in the water two hours later, according to Swimming World. The magazine said the water temperature was in the mid- to high 80s, and several swimmers were treated for heat exhaustion after the race.

• The Kenya Red Cross says seven people have died in a stampede while trying to gain access to a soccer match between two of Kenya’s most popular teams. Red Cross official Taitus Mong Mungou said six people died at Nyayo National Stadium and one died after being taken to Kenyatta National Hospital. The Kenya Premier League match between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards continued.

Arrested Former Dallas Cowboys and University of Georgia quarterback Quincy Carter has been arrested on a battery charge in Lawrenceville, Ga. Gwinnett County Police said a woman who identified herself as Carter’s girlfriend told officers Oct. 6 that the 33-year-old Decatur, Ga. native was drunk when he choked and hit her because she wanted to end their relationship. Officers said 35-year-old Egan Jacobs had bumps and bruises.

Decided Former Astros All-Star Jeff Bagwell will not return as Houston’s hitting coach next season. Bagwell informed general manager Ed Wade that he did not want to continue in the position. Bagwell was named the Astros hitting coach on July 11, after Sean Berry was fired. All of the Astros coaches except Bagwell accepted two-year contract extensions in September. Bagwell told the team that he wanted to discuss his future with his family before signing. The Astros say Bagwell will remain with the organization in a role similar to his previous position as a special assistant to Wade.
