In briefs: Williams wins, Querrey out at U.S. Open

There will be a rematch. Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams will play again at the U.S. Open, on Friday, in the semifinals.

Spaniards Fernando Verdasco and Rafael Nadal, both lefties, will hook up in a men’s quarterfinal.

There won’t be any American men in the singles. Sam Querrey’s bid to make the final eight was scuttled by a quirky wind, cramping legs and sturdy man from Switzerland who wasn’t named Roger Federer but who was quite happy to make it Switzerland 2, USA 0 in the quarterfinals.

Here’s how everybody got there Tuesday.

Third-seeded Williams, 30 years old and nine years away from her last U.S. Open title, handled the clever pacing from sixth-seeded Francesca Schiavone and won, 7-6 (5), 6-4, in 1 hour 54 minutes.

Then the second-seeded Clijsters, who is the defending champion, withstood the athletic Samantha Stosur, who was seeded fifth, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Verdasco, who is seeded eighth, overcame a two-set deficit for only the second time in his career and beat another Spaniard, 10th-seeded David Ferrer, 5-7, 7-6 (8), 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (4). The winning shot after 4 hours 23 minutes? A running forehand that curved around the net post.

Top-seeded Nadal had it much easier. His match started at 11:07 p.m. in New York and it ended about as quickly as possible with Nadal beating 23rd-seeded Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

That was a shorter match than the one played, and lost, by Querrey, the 22-year-old from Thousand Oaks, Calif., who had a chance to advance to his first Grand Slam tournament quarterfinal, with a real opportunity to move to the semifinals.

But as quickly as Stanislas Wawrinka chipped a service return and snapped off a sneaky volley, a weary Querrey ended up the dejected loser, 7-6 (9), 6-7 (5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

Kentucky recruit said to have taken cash

Basketball: Kentucky recruit Enes Kanter received more than $100,000 in cash and benefits while he played for a professional team in Turkey, the club’s general manager told the New York Times.

Nedim Karakas, the GM for Fenerbahce Ulker, said the team has handed over banking and housing records to the NCAA, which is reviewing Kanter’s amateur status.

The 6-foot-11, 272-pound Kanter is one of the top prospects in Kentucky’s highly rated recruiting class.

• Lithuania advances: Linas Kleiza scored 30 points to help send Lithuania into the quarterfinals of the basketball world championship with a 78-67 win over China in Istanbul, Turkey.

China jumped out to a 16-5 lead, but Lithuania used a 16-2 run in the second quarter to go ahead 36-31 with 3:20 left.

Liu Wei scored 21 for China.

Report: Bush to be stripped of Heisman

Football: Yahoo! Sports reported that 2005 Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush is expected to be stripped of the award by the end of the month

The former Southern Cal running back would become the first player in the 75-year history of the award to have the Heisman Trophy taken away. The report also said the award would be left vacant for ’05.

The NCAA found major violations in USC’s football program and levied serious sanctions against the school in June.

“I can tell you the Heisman Trophy trust has made no decision regarding the Reggie Bush situation,” Robert Whalen, executive director of the Heisman Trophy Trust, told the Associated Press.

The website cited two anonymous sources close to the Heisman Trophy Trust, who say the group’s investigation is almost complete and would agree with the NCAA’s finding that Bush was ineligible during the ’05 season.

• LSU, Oregon to play in 2011 Cowboys Classic: Oregon and LSU will play at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in the opening weekend of the 2011 season. The game will be played Sept. 3.

The prime-time matchup was announced Tuesday, three days after fourth-ranked TCU beat then-No. 24 Oregon State 30-21 in the 2010 Cowboys Classic at the $1.2 billion home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.

Seventh-ranked Oregon and No. 19 LSU haven’t played each other since 1977. LSU has won two of the previous three meetings in the series.

LSU defeated North Carolina 30-24 in its season opener last Saturday at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Oregon defeated New Mexico 72-0.
