In brief: Sasquatch close invite with win
Brandon Stevens and Josue Hernandez each scored a goal and the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch closed out their men’s soccer invitational tournament at Spokane Falls CC with a 2-0 victory over the Tacoma Titans on Wednesday.
Stevens took a diagonal pass from Jordon Eboral and buried a shot in the net just 8:41 into the match. Hernandez scored off a deflection at 84:01.
In the tourney’s other match, Femi Akinniyi and Suku Hudson scored two goals apiece as the Pierce Raiders breezed to a 5-1 win over the Everett Trojans.
Women’s soccer
Courtney Kelley scored on a header 5:47 into the second half and the CC Spokane Sasquatch held on for a 1-0 victory over the Tacoma Titans in their invitational tourney at Spokane Falls CC.
Nikayla Caudill picked up an assist on the game-winning goal. Sasquatch goalkeeper Shaylie Barcellos made three saves en route to the shutout.
In the other match, Gabby Nevell scored off a corner kick and the Clackamas Cougars edged the Everett Trojans 2-1.
Volleyball
Karis Gamache had 15 kills and Kealey Johnston added 13 kills and 21 digs to propel the CC Spokane Sasquatch (6-1, 1-0) to a 25-27, 23-25, 25-15, 25-17, 15-10 come-from-behind win over the Walla Walla Warriors (2-5, 0-1) in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges opener in Walla Walla.
Track and field
Former Washington State Cougars standout Bernard Lagat was named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the men’s 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs over the weekend at the IAAF Continental Cup in Split, Croatia.
Lagat, who won the 1,500-meter race at the World Cup in Madrid eight years ago, became the first athlete to win three different events at a World or Continental Cup.
