In brief: Americans get past Spokane Chiefs
The Tri-City Americans scored two power-play goals in the second period en route to a 2-1 preseason win over the Spokane Chiefs on Saturday night in Kennewick.
James Reid was perfect in net with 13 saves in the first period for the Chiefs while Spokane put just four shots on goal through the opening 20 minutes.
The Americans scored their only goals in the second.
The first came at 3:13 by Mike Brown. Adam Hughsman put Tri-City ahead 2-0 at 12:56. Zachary Yuen has assists on both goals.
Spokane pulled within the final margin at 3:01 of the third when Skyler Hladun scored his first of the preseason. Mike Aviani and Bruin McDonald figured in on the assists.
The Chiefs return to Kennewick on Friday for another preseason match.
• The visiting Beaver Valley Nitehawks edged the Spokane Braves 3-2 in a KIJHL match Saturday.
Nick Redding scored both Braves goals and goalie Garrett Barr had 26 saves.
Volleyball
Three players combined for 59 kills to lead the Cal Poly Mustangs to a 25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 25-16 win over Washington State University in the Nike Cougar Challenge at Pullman.
Kristina Graven had a team-high 20 kills to lead Cal Poly (7-3). Meagan Ganzer led WSU (5-4) with 26, while setter Sara Biondi had 45 assists.
• Texas A&M fought off a game Gonzaga University 25-22, 25-23, 27-25 on the second day of the Pioneer Classic hosted by the University of Denver.
The Zags, who have lost six straight, fell to 2-8. Gonzaga seemed to stun the Aggies with its aggressive and strong play in the first set despite its two early losses in the tournament. After a kill by GU’s Caitlin Cozad broke a 22-22 tie, A&M turned up its play. Schylur Edelman and Kaprina Goodwin combined for 18 of Gonzaga’s 32 kills and Cozad and Kylie Edinger had seven kills apiece.
Earlier in the day, Gonzaga fell to Denver 22-25, 25-12, 25-27, 17-15.
• At the Inland Northwest Communications Tournament hosted by Community Colleges of Spokane, the host finished with a 4-0 record and North Idaho College was 3-1.
NIC’s loss came to CCS, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22.
In Saturday’s matches, Karis Gamache led CCS (11-1) with 28 combined kills and Tina Strahinic led NIC (8-5) with 38.
Men’s soccer
Whitworth University’s shutout streak ended at 331 minutes and with it the Pirates’ winning streak to open the season.
Montclair State (N.J.) defeated Whitworth 1-0 in the Division III championship match of the Mayor’s Cup tournament at Oneonta State in Oneonta, N.Y.
Whitworth (3-1) couldn’t find the net despite a 9-5 edge in shots. Dan Mendoza scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute.
Women’s soccer
The University of Idaho (4-2-0) went ahead 2-0 early and held on to top South Dakota 2-1 at Vermillion, S.D.
