Fined The NFL fined several players Friday for misconduct during Week 1 games, including Minnesota Vikings offensive tackle Phil Loadholt $10,000 for two unnecessary roughness penalties in their game against New Orleans. Tennessee linebacker Stephen Tulloch was fined $7,500, and Houston running back Arian Foster and cornerback Glover Quin were fined $5,000 each. New England defensive back Patrick Chung, Denver defensive end Ryan McBean, Carolina safety Sherrod Martin and Dallas nose tackle Jay Ratliff also were fined $5,000 each. All the fines were for unnecessary roughness.

Upheld The NCAA upheld the four-game suspension for Georgia star receiver A.J. Green. Green had appealed his four-game suspension by the NCAA for selling a bowl jersey for $1,000 to person deemed to be an agent. But an NCAA committee denied his request.

Sentenced Former University of Florida broadcaster Steve Babik has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for child pornography. A federal judge sentenced Babik to 151 months in prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release.

Postponed The DUI manslaughter trial of former major league baseball player Jim Leyritz in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is temporarily on hold because of legal wrangling over key pieces of evidence. Leyritz’s attorney David Bogenschutz said the trial would be delayed while he appeals decisions on the evidence at the 4th District Court of Appeal.

• The trial for 22-year-old John Lomax III, the man charged with fatally stabbing University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard, appears unlikely to be held this fall in Veron, Conn., because of problems with turning over evidence to defense lawyers.

Out American goalkeeper Hope Solo will have right shoulder surgery and miss qualifying for the Women’s World Cup. The U.S. Soccer Federation said that the 29-year-old will be sidelined for five to six months, a timetable that should allow her to return for the start of the World Cup on June 26.

Died The first American to sail solo around the globe without stopping, Dodge Morgan, died of cancer in Portland, Maine. He was 78.
