Area roundup: Whits women rally
The Whitworth women’s golf team rallied to take the team title at the Pacific Fall Invitational and Emily Guthrie won individual medalist honors Sunday in Banks, Ore.
Guthrie posted the best individual round of the tournament Sunday to beat Linfield’s Brynn Hurdus by two strokes. Guthrie shot 81 on Saturday and 78 on Sunday for a 159 total.
The Pirates trailed Linfield by four stokes after Saturday’s round, and shot a 337 to Linfield’s 346 on Sunday to take the team title.
Women’s soccer
Whitney Brannan set a single-game scoring record for Eastern Washington with her first career hat trick, but the Eagles (0-6-1) lost 4-3 in overtime to South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D.
• Emma Stolz scored in the second half to give Washington State (4-6-0) a 1-0 victory over Pepperdine and the tournament title late Saturday in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic in Waipahu, Hawaii.
• Carly Schilperoort had a goal and an assist as Whitworth beat George Fox 3-0 in Northwest Conference play in Newberg, Ore. Sarah Berentson also scored for the Pirates (4-3, 2-1 NWC), who got their first goal on an own goal by the Bruins.
Men’s soccer
Justin Mikkola and Cameron Bushey each scored their second goals of the season as Whitworth beat George Fox 2-0 in a Northwest Conference match in Newberg, Ore. Kyle Novak made one save for his third shutout for the Pirates (4-2, 1-1 NWC).
• Juan Hoyos scored in the 80th minute to give Northern Illinois a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga at the Lakeside Classic in Evanston, Ill. The Bulldogs (2-3-0) lost both of their games in the tournament.
Cross country
Gonzaga, Eastern Washington and Idaho all competed Saturday in the Sundodger Invitational meet in Seattle, with the Vandal women and men finishing second and third, respectively.
Hannah Kiser and Julia Veseth led the Idaho women, with Kiser finishing ninth in 21 minutes, 30.79 seconds on the 6,000-meter women’s course. Veseth was 10th in 21:36.24. The Idaho men were led by Barry Britt, who finished sixth in 25:12.58 on the 8,000-meter men’s course.
Both Gonzaga teams finished fourth. Chris Boyle was the top men’s finisher for the Bulldogs in 16th place in 24:35.98. Kayla Lloyd (22nd, 22:11.16) and Laura Volcheff (23rd, 22:11.76) led the women.
Both Eastern teams finished sixth. Amy Kolin (12th, 21:41.66) led the Eagle women, and Kyle King (32nd, 25:24.29) led the men.
Junior hockey
Ryan Hadley-Schaal was the only Brave to score as Spokane (2-3-0) fell 3-1 to the Kelowna Chiefs in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play in Kelowna, British Columbia.
