Comment sought on rail yard cleanup

The public can weigh in on a proposed cleanup of a rail yard along Trent Avenue through Oct. 4. Portions of the 130-acre site are polluted with petroleum, heavy metals and other toxic compounds. The site is owned by the BNSF Railway Co. and lies one-half mile south of the Spokane River and above the aquifer. The rail yard is used for fueling, intermodal operations and switching of rail cars. BNSF has cleaned up several spills on the property and proposed a work plan for the remaining pollution. To view the plan, visit www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/tcp/sites/parkwater/railyard_hp.htm.
