Cougars swat No. 24 Zags

The Washington State Cougars (12-12) got home runs from each of their infielders and breezed to an 11-6 win over the 24th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs (16-9-1) in nonconference play Tuesday in Spokane.

WSU first baseman Taylor Ard hit a solo shot in the second inning. Third baseman Matt Argyropoulos hit a two-run shot in the third. Second baseman Tommy Richards hit a solo homer later in the third and shortstop Cody Bartlett smacked a three-run homer in the fifth.

Golf

Jarred Bossio shot a 68 to finish tied for ninth place with a 209 and help the Idaho Vandals jump four spots and place seventh at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Also at the tournament, Gonzaga’s Peter Gullickson carded a final-round 68 to finish at 213 and tie for 23rd. GU placed last.

Baylor won the tourney and Tarquin Macmanus of Arizona was medalist.

• The Eastern Washington Eagles finished 21st at the 23-team Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Chandler, Ariz.

Awards

Carter Comito’s second-place showing in the shot put at the Sam Adams Classic earned the Whitworth thrower Northwest Conference field athlete of the week honors.

• Whitworth’s Rachel Burns was the NWC’s women’s tennis player of the week after posting a 2-0 record.
