Sunday Locals: Shears, Covington win final Junior Bowlers stop

Dalton Shears and Jesse Covington claimed top honors following the final Junior Bowlers Tour stop of the season last Sunday at North Bowl.

Shears won the final tournament, rising from the No. 2 qualifying position to knock off leading qualifier Nathan Rawley 248-224 for the title. Rawley had started the day with a leading 710 series and held onto the top spot going into the five-person rolloffs.

Covington, who had surged from 11th after the first qualifying block to claim the No. 3 spot in the rolloffs, finished third; Taylor Gamble was fourth; and Nick Harris fifth.

Shears had the day’s high game, a 280. Karissa Shiflet led the girls with a 238.

Covington, however, wound up with the highest average for the season, a 213, and led the all-star team. Shears held the No. 2 spot followed by Bry Tillett, Ryan Garely and Tony Werley, who tied for fourth, and Cody Hurley.

Charstie Saville had high season average for the girls, a 185.

The JBT ends with its fun tourney today at Valley Bowl.

Hockey

The two Spokane American Youth Hockey Association Jr. Chiefs teams that played in USA Hockey Tier II national tournaments advanced out of pool play to the quarterfinals before being eliminated.

The U-16 Midgets beat host Reston, Va., 6-4 in their opener before losing to Metro, Md., and Ashburn, Va., in pool play. Affton, Mo., defeated Spokane 9-0 in the quarterfinals, ending the Spokane Jr. Chiefs’ season with an 18-20-8 record. Bobby LaRue had a hat trick in the opener and scored half of Spokane’s eight goals in the tournament.

The U-12 PeeWee team defeated Montgomery, Md., 4-2 and New Hampshire East 5-1 around a 7-0 loss to Dallas in pool play. Tampa, Fla., beat Spokane 7-1 in the quarterfinals to end its season with a 57-9-3 record. Jared Gaylord had five of Spokane’s 10 goals, including a hat trick against New Hampshire.

Golf

James Fahy from Vancouver, B.C., a redshirt freshman at the University of Victoria, will transfer to Gonzaga, Bulldogs men’s coach Robert Gray announced.

Fahy, a veteran of Canadian Junior Golf Association play, is a two-time winner of the PUMA Challenge/CJGA Junior Worlds Qualifier. In 2010 he also tied for 10th at the BC Amateur and was 12th in the BC Junior Boys Championship after a final-round 69.

Soccer

The first national team recruit in school history and seven players from within the state are among 10 who have signed letters of intent with Eastern Washington, Eagles women’s coach George Hageage announced.

Leading the contingent is goalkeeper Nathalie Schwery from Switzerland, who has played 25 games with U-17, U-19 and U-20 Swiss National teams the last four years. Last season she played in two games for Switzerland in the U-20 World Cup in Germany.

Also slated to join the Eagles in the fall are Marianne Johnson from Pasco, a midfielder who had six goals and two assists to help Walla Walla Community College win a second straight NWAACC championship in 2010; Katie Cashman, a midfielder from Granite Falls, Wash., who had a school career record of 72 goals and 58 assists; Alisha Stott from Lakewood of Arlington, Wash., who had 23 goals last season and 39 in her career; and Cassie Black from Battle Ground, Wash., a two-time all-league selection who had 52 career goals and 23 assists.

Also, Brittney Conway, a midfielder/forward from Mount Si of Snoqualmie, Wash., who will transfer from Bellevue Community College, where she had 13 goals and was an NWAACC All-Star selection; Jessica Wallace, a defender from Squalicum of Bellingham, Wash., a three-time All-Whatcom County selection; and Mishayla Bertelsen, a midfielder from Gig Harbor, Wash., who had a team-leading 19 goals her senior season.

And Haley Stading from Evergreen, Colo., a forward-midfielder who was a three-time all-league selection who scored 18 goals as a junior, and Kayla Sutter, a defender from Beaverton, Ore., who helped her school to a second-place State 6A finish in 2009 and into the semifinals in 2010.

Wrestling

Jake Laden from University placed sixth at 285 pounds in the 22nd annual National High School Seniors Championships last weekend in Virginia Beach, Va.

Laden won his first three matches, 12-9, 4-2 and 5-3, before losing 1-0 to national runner-up Collin Campbell from North Carolina. Laden also lost 1-0 to Jesse Trent of Kansas to drop into the match for fifth and sixth places. Trent wound up fourth.
