Your week

YOUR HEALTH

Carbohydrates are controversial in dieting circles these days, but if you’re going to eat them, you might as well do it at dinnertime.

In a study recently published in the online journal Obesity, 100 obese male and female Israeli police officers age 25 to 55 were divided into two groups that each ate 1,300 to 1,500 calories per day.

One group ate more protein at breakfast and lunch and got more carbohydrates at dinner, while the other had its carbs spread more evenly throughout the day.

After six months, the carbs-for-dinner group saw more weight loss and body fat reduction, and also felt more satisfied, the study found.

YOUR HOME

Even seasoned gardeners can find themselves puzzled about pruning. “The Pruning Answer Book” (Storey, $14.95) helps clear up the confusion.

The pocket-size book, by the late Lewis Hill and Penelope O’Sullivan, covers the basics such as what to prune when, what equipment to use, how to make the cuts and why pruning is beneficial.

A plant-by-plant pruning guide in the back of the book lets you find quick guidance on a particular tree, shrub or other plant.
