Several websites were down or slowed Thursday, including many focused on social media, like Foursquare, HootSuite and Reddit. An Amazon.com Inc. data center in northern Virginia suffered an outage. Separate from Amazon’s retail business, the service rents out space on its computers to thousands of other companies, ranging from big ones like Netflix to small software firms. Amazon Web Services is the leading provider of utility-based computing, a technology loosely known as “cloud computing.”
