In brief: Mead’s Rogers wins Cadet Nationals freestyle title

Wrestling: Mead junior Jordan Rogers made it a sweep at the FILA Cadet Nationals with a freestyle championship at 167.5 pounds on Saturday in Akron, Ohio.

Rogers, who won the Greco-Roman title on Thursday, will be headed to Hungary in August to compete in both disciplines for the American team at the world championships Aug. 25-28.

He went 9-0 in the two-day freestyle portion of the tournament with six pins and three technical falls. He defeated Jason Grimes of Georgia by technical fall in the championship match.

Central Valley freshman Colton Orrino went 3-2 but did not place in the top six. Sophomore Ryan Gable of University lost his two freestyle matches. Freshman Chandler Rogers, Jordan’s brother, suffered an elbow injury en route to a third-place finish in the Greco-Roman competition and had to sit out the freestyle.

The Cadet Nationals are for wrestlers ages 15-17.

Welliver scores TKO victory

Boxing: Chauncy Welliver of Spokane successfully defended his World Boxing Council Continental Americas heavyweight title on Saturday night when he stopped Galen Brown at 1:27 of the fifth round of a scheduled 10-rounder in Topeka, Kan.

The end came after Welliver delivered a half dozen power punches and the referee stepped in to stop the fight.

The 27-year-old Welliver, who weighed in at 239 pounds, improved to 47-5-5 while 29-year-old Brown of St. Joseph, Mo., fell to 35-16-1. Brown weighed in at 242.

Welliver has won 12 consecutive fights.
