Your week

YOUR HEALTH

Seventy percent of kids who abuse prescription drugs get them from family and friends, according to the National Family Partnership. Some preventive tips:

• Explain the risk. Make sure kids know that using prescription drugs incorrectly can be just as dangerous and addictive as taking illegal drugs; many teens think they’re “safer.”

• Start talking early: The average age of first drug use is 12 1/2 years.

• Store drugs safely. A locked medicine cabinet is ideal. Also do regular inventories of your supply to make sure none is missing, as well as to toss old prescriptions.

• Dispose of drugs safely. Look for “take-back” events organized by local drug stores or police departments. If you put medication in the trash, mix it with cat litter or coffee grounds so kids won’t dig it out.

YOUR HOME

Your tired countertops can get the look of concrete with the EZ Top resurfacing system.

The overlay can be used on most materials, including plastic laminate, tile, marble and granite. It goes on in multiple thin coats and is designed for use by either professionals or do-it-yourselfers.

The product comes in white or gray and can be tinted with a colorant you order separately, or stained after it’s installed.

EZ Top can be ordered from the Stamp Store, (888) 848-0059. A 6-gallon kit covers 60 square feet and costs $99. Shipping is extra.

YOUR FOOD

Soup may not sound like an ideal warm-weather meal, but the Italian seafood stew called cioppino is a light, refreshing change of pace. For the recipe, see page C5.
