In brief: U.S. drone attack kills militants

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Two Pakistani intelligence officials say an American drone fired two missiles at a home near the Afghan border, killing at least 20 foreign militants.

The officials say the strike took place before dawn today near Miran Shah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal region.

The nationality of the slain men was not immediately known and the officials said they were trying to get more details.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to media.

Crash at day care kills kids, adults

MONTERREY, Mexico – A tractor trailer loaded with cement crashed into a day-care center in northern Mexico on Tuesday, killing three small girls and three adults.

Nuevo Leon state officials said the truck might have had a brake failure before it crashed into the small building, which was made of mud bricks and is run by a social service agency of the Mexican government.

The girls were aged 2, 4 and 6, State Civil Defense Director Jorge Camacho Rincon said. The adults included a man whose car was hit by the truck near the building and two inside.

The accident happened in the remote town of Arramberi and helicopters were used to evacuate the injured.

Group identified in campus bomb

MEXICO CITY – An anti-technology group calling itself “Individuals Tending to Savagery” was responsible for a package bomb that injured two university professors just outside Mexico City, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

The explosion at the Monterrey Technological Institute’s campus in the state of Mexico on the outskirts of the capital Monday injured two professors, one of whom was involved in robotics research. Neither suffered life-threatening injuries.
