Hired Boise State President Bob Kustra filled two positions in the Broncos’ athletic department. Kustra picked Curt Apsey as interim athletic director on Thursday. Apsey takes over for Gene Bleymaier, who was let go last week after serving nearly 30 years. Kustra also picked John Cunningham, previously at TCU, as the school’s new executive director for compliance.
Pleaded Oklahoma City Thunder starting center Kendrick Perkins pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 30. Perkins was arrested just after 2 a.m. Saturday in Beaumont, Texas, where an event for his charitable foundation was being held.
Sidelined Southern California guard Jio Fontan will miss the upcoming season after tearing a ligament in his left knee during the Trojans’ exhibition tour in Brazil. The 6-foot Fontan was the Trojans’ second- leading scorer as a junior last season.
Denied San Diego State says center Brian Carlwell has been denied a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Carlwell had applied for the sixth year based on injuries sustained in a car accident when he was a freshman at Illinois and a knee injury the following season.
