In brief: Injury ends streak, hands Murray title

Tennis: Novak Djokovic’s remarkable winning streak ended with a grimace, stopped by a sore shoulder that forced him to retire in the second set on Sunday and gave Andy Murray the championship of the Western & Southern Open at Mason, Ohio.

He was completely off his game against the fourth-seeded Murray, who won the first set 6-4 and was ahead 3-0 in the second when Djokovic decided just before the rain came that he couldn’t continue. Djokovic got his shoulder treated after he lost the first set, grimacing at one point.

Djokovic is a sensational 57-2 on the season after suffering his first loss on hard courts.

It was Murray’s second title this season. The 24-year-old Scotsman also won at the Queen’s Club. He lost his other final match to Djokovic at the Australian Open.

• Schiavone advances in New Haven: In New Haven, Conn., Francesca Schiavone of Italy needed only 79 minutes to beat Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening first-round match at the inaugural New Haven Open at Yale.

Montana continues winning at LLWS

Little League World Series: Patrick Zimmer tossed five shutout innings and Ben Askelson hit a two-out, two-run single to lift Montana to a 3-1 win over Lafayette, La., at South Williamsport, Pa.

Closer Sean Jones got a fielder’s choice to end the game after Louisiana sent the tying run to the plate with two outs in the sixth.

The Big Sky league squad is the first team from Montana to advance to the series. They extended their winning streak to six on a dreary day at Lamade Stadium.

• Venezuela homers way past Canada: In South Williamsport, Pa., Yonny Hernandez hit two homers, and three pitchers combined for a shutout to help Maracay, Venezuela, stay undefeated at the Little League World Series with an 8-0 win over Langley, B.C.

• California tops Kentucky: Huntington Beach, Calif., pounded out 12 hits and Hagen Danner and Nick Pratto combined on a two-hitter in a 10-0 win over LaGrange, Ky., at South Williamsport, Pa.

• Ruiz lifts Mexico past Japan: In South Williamsport, Pa., Bruno Ruiz’s RBI single drove home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lift Mexicali, Mexico, over Hamamatsu City, Japan, 3-2.

Sutton wins Spanish Vuelta second stage

Miscellany: In Playas de Orihuela, Spain, Australian rider Christopher Sutton edged out the pack to win the second stage of the Spanish Vuelta, while Daniele Bennati took the leader’s jersey from Leopard Trek teammate Jakob Fuglsang.

Sutton completed the 109-mile course from La Nucia to Playas de Orihuela in 4 hours, 11 minutes, 41 seconds.

• Brown races to Top Fuel win: In Brainerd, Minn., Antron Brown raced to his fourth win of the season in Top Fuel at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.

Johnny Gray (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also winners.

• LSU players delay meeting about bar fight: Four LSU football players hired a defense attorney and put off a meeting with police about a bar fight that started when a patron honked at a crowd blocking his exit from a parking lot, Baton Rouge police said.

• Road running great Kelley dies: John J. Kelley, winner of the 1957 Boston Marathon and known to his fans as the first modern American road runner, died.

Amby Burfoot, a friend in the early 1960s, confirmed his death. He said Kelley died Sunday in Stonington at his daughter’s home from a melanoma that spread to his lungs. He was 80.

Tanda takes Rancho Bernardo Handicap

Horse Racing: Favored 4-year-old filly Tanda took the lead on the turn and faced no serious challenge as she won the $150,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap, a sprint for fillies and mares on at Del Mar, Calif.

Ridden by Joe Talamo, Tanda beat She’s Cheeky by 1 1/4 lengths, covering 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.34.

• Hungry Island earns upset win: Hungry Island rallied from well behind the leaders in the final quarter mile and scored a 2 1/2-length upset victory in the $150,000 Lake Placid Stakes for fillies and mares at Saratoga Race Course at Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

• Derby-winning jockey Borel arrested for DWI: Three-time Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Calvin Borel has been arrested on a drunken driving charge in Indiana.

The 44-year-old Louisville, Ky., resident was released on $100 bond from the Vanderburgh County Jail in Evansville after being arrested the night before. He is due in court today.
