August ends with cooler temperatures

A calm morning should give way to gusty conditions as a weather change arrives over the Inland Northwest. Higher air pressure that brought the weekend heat is moving east. The high on Sunday was 94, making it the hottest day of the year so far. August has been 1.4 degrees above normal, and it is only the second month this year with an average temperature above normal. January was also about 1 degree above normal. The average high today in Spokane is 79. Thunderstorms appeared late last night. The last of that low pressure area over Oregon is bringing clouds and a chance of showers today. The high today should reach the upper 80s. Winds may gust to 21 mph today and tonight. A cold front arriving from the west is likely tonight. It will trigger a major change in the weather by Wednesday. The front was easily seen on satellite images this afternoon moving toward the U.S. border with Canada. On Tuesday, the cooler air begins to be felt with highs getting to about 80 degrees. The weather change is more intense on Wednesday with highs dropping to the lower and middle 70s. A 30 percent chance of showers will accompany the cooler air. Lows will go from near 60 to the lower 50s. Labor Day weekend should bring choice weather with highs in the upper 70s on Friday warming to the 80s on Saturday and Sunday.
