NFL Notes: Redskins duo face penalty

A person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press that Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams and tight end Fred Davis are expected to be suspended by the NFL for the rest of the season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The person spoke Sunday on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made.

Both players are starters for the Redskins, who fell to 4-8 with a 34-19 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday. Davis had six catches for 99 yards receiving, both game-highs.

SI.com first reported Sunday that Davis and Williams would be punished. Citing an unidentified source, the website also said the players hadn’t received written notice from the league about their suspensions, so were able to play Sunday.

Gore becomes 49ers’ rushing leader

San Francisco’s Frank Gore ran for a 2-yard gain early in the second quarter against St. Louis to give him 7,345 career yards rushing, moving him past late Hall of Famer Joe Perry (7,344) for most in 49ers franchise history.

The 28-year-old Gore, a two-time Pro Bowler in his seventh NFL season, has said it was a goal for this season to become the career rushing leader – though getting back to the playoffs is a bigger priority.

Gore and his teammates are wearing No. 34 helmet decals this season in honor of Perry, the first player with back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons and nicknamed “The Jet” for his sensational speed. He died in April at age 84.

Raiders’ Seymour ejected for punch

Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour was ejected from a game for the second time in as many seasons.

Seymour was sent to the sideline for throwing a punch in the third quarter against Miami. The incident occurred with the Dolphins driving for a score that put them ahead 27-0, and they went on to win 34-14.

“I apologize to the team, to our players and to Raider nation,” Seymour said. “I wasn’t there to finish the game with my teammates.”

Coach Hue Jackson said the officials told him Seymour punched someone on the ground.

“I told him he can’t get kicked out of the game, he’s one of the rocks on this football team,” Jackson said.

Last year Seymour was ejected and fined $25,000 for hitting Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the helmet.
