Area hoops: Palmer’s career night leads No. 25 Gonzaga women
Redshirt sophomore Haiden Palmer scored a career-high 21 points and the Gonzaga women’s basketball team, ranked 25th in the coaches poll, overwhelmed UC Riverside in an 83-56 nonconference victory on Saturday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
The win was the Bulldogs’ third straight. GU is 8-2 on the season.
Gonzaga senior Katelan Redmon finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs held a 51-19 advantage in rebounds.
Gonzaga ended the first half on an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 19 points.
Tre’Shonti Nottingham scored 13 points and Natasha Hadley added 11 to lead UC Riverside.
Next up for GU is the Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas, where the Bulldogs will play Georgia on Monday and Dayton on Wednesday.
• Boise State extended its halftime lead with a 12-2 second-half run and the Broncos (7-4) beat Eastern Washington 72-63 in a nonconference game at Reese Court in Cheney.
Brianne Ryan made five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points to lead the Eagles (5-6). Laura Hughes added eight points and six rebounds for EWU.
Kati Isham led four Broncos players in double figures with 21 points.
The Eagles play at Pacific on Monday and host Idaho on Wednesday.
• Jasmine Stohr scored 22 points as NAIA fourth-ranked Lewis-Clark State College beat Whitworth 79-72 in a nonconference game at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Lexie Belcher had 20 points and Emily Guthrie made five 3-pointers and finished with 15 points and six assists for the Pirates.
Whitworth will play in an exhibition game against the Whitworth alumni on Dec. 30 and will play at Pacific Lutheran on Jan. 6.
• Lane built a 16-point halftime lead and beat Community Colleges of Spokane 60-46 at the Skagit Valley crossover tournament at Mount Vernon.
Danielle Schmidt scored 17 points to lead the Titans (7-2).
Amanda Buttrey led the Sasquatch (4-6) with 13 points and five rebounds.
CCS plays for third and fifth places at 1 p.m. today against Big Bend, which lost to Skagit Valley 82-71.
