Ogwumike has career night over Lady Vols

Women’s basketball: Nnemkadi Ogwumike scored a career-high 42 points and dazzled in what might have been the most meaningful home game of her senior season, and No. 4 Stanford (8-1) beat sixth-ranked Tennessee 97-80 in Stanford, Calif., on Tuesday night in one of the sport’s best rivalries.

The Cardinal extended their school-record home winning streak to 68 games in front of a sellout crowd of 7,329 at Maples Pavilion.

Toni Kokenis scored a career-high 26 points with five 3-pointers and Ogwumike dominated for Stanford in another physical, back-and-forth game like those that have defined the storied series with Tennessee (7-3).

Unbeaten Louisville men avoid upset

Men’s basketball: Kyle Kuric had 17 points and eight rebounds and No. 4 Louisville (11-0) escaped an upset on its home court to remain one of six Division I teams still unbeaten with a 69-62 victory over the College of Charleston at Louisville, Ky.

The Cardinals trailed 57-55 with 5:06 to play but went on a 9-2 run over the next 3 minutes, capped by a 3-pointer by Chris Smith that put them ahead 66-59 with 2:06 left.

Rose gets $94 million extension from Bulls

NBA: Derrick Rose agreed to a five-year, roughly $94 million contract extension, and the Bulls plan to make it official at a news conference today at the Berto Center in Chicago, sources told the Chicago Tribune.

The extension is for about $10 million to $11 million more than Rose would have been eligible for under the previous collective bargaining agreement.

NHL: P.A. Parenteau scored in regulation and added the shootout winner to give the New York Islanders a 3-2 win over the Jets in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Parenteau and Michael Grabner (Spokane Chiefs) gave the Islanders a pair of one-goal leads in the first two periods.

• Sutter hired to helm Kings: Darryl Sutter will assume duties as the next head coach of the Los Angeles Kings beginning with today’s practice, general manager Dean Lombardi announced.

Schild wins World Cup slalom hat trick

Skiing: Marlies Schild of Austria completed a hat trick of slalom victories by winning a World Cup night race in Flachau, Austria.

Schild, who won the season opener in Aspen, Colo., and again in Courchevel, France, two days ago, successfully defended a lead from the first run to finish in 1 minute, 51.53 seconds for the 30th slalom win of her career.

American Lindsey Vonn finished eighth to retain her lead in the overall standings.

Three in fatal brawl sentenced to prison

Miscellany: Three men who fatally attacked a man outside a Philadelphia Phillies home game in a brawl police say was sparked by a spilled drink have been sentenced to prison terms.

Thirty-year-old Francis Kirchner was sentenced to consecutive terms totaling nine to 18 years, 37-year-old Charles Bowers got consecutive terms totaling five to 10 years and 48-year-old James Groves was sentenced to concurrent terms of two to four years. All three men pleaded guilty in October to voluntary manslaughter and criminal conspiracy in the July 2009 death of David Sale Jr.

• Fine accuser pleads guilty of sex charges: Zach Tomaselli, one of the four men who have accused former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine of molesting him, pleaded guilty in Auburn, Maine, to sexually abusing a teenage boy in an agreement that caps his sentence at just more than three years in prison.

• Giants’ Boley accused of abuse: Authorities are investigating a report that New York Giants linebacker Michael Boley physically abused his 5-year-old son in Gadsden, Ala., his hometown.

• NFL adds trainers to aid with concussions: The NFL will require teams to place certified athletic trainers in the press box to help monitor head injuries.

League spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed that memos are being sent to all 32 clubs to explain the new protocol, which is expected to begin with this week’s games.

• Bears promote former Vandal: The Chicago Bears, looking to keep their slim playoff hopes alive despite a string of devastating injuries, promoted former Idaho Vandals receiver Max Komar from the practice squad. Komar will replace Johnny Knox who suffered a season ending back injury against the Seattle Seahawks Sunday.

• Wambach named female athlete of the year: Abby Wambach, whose header in the final seconds of the Women’s World Cup quarterfinals led the U.S. to a victory and sparked a nationwide frenzy rarely seen for women’s sports, has been voted the 2011 Female Athlete of the Year.
