Whitworth men catch fire after halftime

SAN ANTONIO – Felix Friedt scored 19 of his 25 points during Whitworth’s 61-point second half Thursday at the eighth-ranked Pirates defeated Southwestern (Texas) University 97-63 at the Trinity University men’s basketball invitational.

The Pirates (8-2) finished 1-1 at the tournament and dropped Southwestern to 1-12 overall.

Whitworth shot 21 of 31 from the floor in the second half, including 8 of 12 on 3-pointers. Wade Gebbers hit 4 of 5 3-pointers after halftime to finish 5 of 10.

Pirates forward Idris Lasisi scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half.

Friedt, who shot 12 of 13 from the free-throw line, added game highs of 12 rebounds and five assists.
