In brief: Grant will go to museum sign
OPPORTUNITY – The Spokane Valley Heritage Museum has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation to help restore the historic scroll sign on the museum. The sign, which reads “Anno Opportunity 1912,” hangs above the door of the former Opportunity Township Hall on Sprague Avenue just west of Pines Road.
The museum previously received a $1,500 grant from the Spokane Preservation Advocates in July to help restore the sign. The restoration project is estimated to cost $3,000. The building is on the local, state and national historic registers.
Commission appointees OK’d
SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley City Council affirmed the mayor’s appointment of Steven Neill and Lewis Higgins to the city’s Planning Commission this week. Both will serve three-year terms on the commission, which holds public hearings on planning and zoning issues and makes recommendations on new regulations to the city council.
Neill was appointed to the Planning Commission in May to fill an unexpired term and applied to retain his seat. Higgins, who ran unsuccessfully for a Spokane Valley City Council seat this year, was one of several applicants who filed to replace outgoing Commissioner Joe Mann, who did not seek reappointment.
