Signed The Seattle Mariners signed left-handed reliever George Sherrill to a one-year contract. Sherrill appeared in 51 games with the Atlanta Braves last season and was 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He has limited lefty hitters to just a .180 batting average over the span of his eight-year career.

Confirmed Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett is about to become a limited shareholder in the American-owned Roma soccer club. Roma confirmed to the Associated Press that Garnett accepted an offer from James Pallotta, one of the four Boston executives who closed a deal in August to become the first foreign majority owners of a Serie A club.

Pleaded A lawyer for Floyd Mayweather Jr. pleaded no contest on his behalf under a plea deal to resolve a misdemeanor battery case stemming from a scuffle with a Las Vegas homeowner association security guard. The 34-year-old Mayweather did not appear in person Friday. He’s due to start a 90-day jail sentence Jan. 6 after pleading guilty Dec. 21 to misdemeanor battery domestic violence and no contest to harassment in a separate case.

Filed Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Kyle Orton and some 20 other NFL players are suing a Chicago law firm for more than $10 million, claiming they received bad financial advice on investing in energy concerns. The 14-page lawsuit filed this week in Cook County Circuit Court claims that the alleged negligence of Chuhak & Tecson cost Orton and the other players millions of dollars related to energy investments. Announced Offensive lineman Barrett Jones announced he will return to Alabama for his senior football season. Jones won the Outland Trophy this season as the nation’s best interior lineman.

Died Two-time All-Star Don Mueller, whose hit helped set up Bobby Thomson’s famed home run that won the 1951 N.L. pennant playoff, died Wednesday in Maryland Heights, Mo. He was 84.
