Swank on quest in ‘Conviction’

Philadelphia Inquirer

Available this week on DVD:

“Conviction”: Hilary Swank stars in this true-life drama about a Massachusetts woman who puts herself through college and law school for the sole purpose of exonerating her brother (Sam Rockwell), wrongfully sent to prison on a murder charge. With Minnie Driver, Peter Gallagher, Juliette Lewis and a mess of personal, legal and bureaucratic obstacles to overcome. (1:47; R for language and some violent images) • • •

“Never Let Me Go”: A beautifully mopey adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s much-praised novel, with Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield as young Brits trapped in a mysterious – and, for them, tragic – alternate reality of the 1970s and ’80s. (1:44; R for some sexuality and nudity) • • • 1/2

“Let Me In”: A soulful, faithful remake of the 2008 Swedish film “Let the Right One In,” about the relationship between a lonely, bullied 12-year-old boy and the vampire girl who moves in next door. A heartbreaker of a coming-of-age tale, even if there’s a string of ex-sanguinated corpses to be accounted for. (1:55; R for strong bloody horror violence, language and a brief sexual situation) •   •   •  1/2

“The Tillman Story”: A documentary look at former football star Pat Tillman’s controversial death as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan. (1:34; R for language)

“A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop”: A Chinese noodle shop owner’s scheme to murder his adulterous wife and her lover goes awry in this remake of the Coen brothers’ “Blood Simple.” (1:35; R for some violence)

Also available: “Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2”; “Mean Girls 2”; “Welcome to the Rileys.”
