Finalized Free-agent slugger Vladimir Guerrero finalized an $8 million, one-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. He will serve as Baltimore’s designated hitter and bat cleanup. Announced St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jim Edmonds announced his retirement at age 40. Edmonds injured his right Achilles tendon while rounding the bases last September, and team doctors told Edmonds the injury was so severe he would not be medically cleared to play, and that he could hurt himself even more.

Placed The Pittsburgh Steelers placed the franchise tag on linebacker LaMarr Woodley. Woodley, 26, who just finished his third season with Pittsburgh, had 50 tackles, 10 sacks and two interceptions last season..

Released Washington Redskins kick returner Brandon Banks has been released from the hospital nearly a week after a stabbing that left him with a collapse lung. Banks’ agent, James Gould, said a tube in Banks’ left lung has been removed and the lung is inflated.

Finalists Former players Dennis Rodman and Jamaal Wilkes and former coach Tex Winter (University of Washington among his stops) are among 12 finalists for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. The other finalists are former NBA stars Maurice Cheeks, Chris Mullin and Ralph Sampson, five-time Olympian Teresa Edwards, Stanford women’s coach Tara VanDerveer, former NBA coach Dick Motta, Philadelphia University coach Herb Magee, college referee Hank Nichols, and Al Attles, the current vice president and assistant general manager of the Golden State Warriors.

Honored The Carolina Hurricanes honored the captain of their only Stanley Cup championship team by retiring Rod Brind’Amour’s jersey No. 17.

Traded The St. Louis Blues traded defenseman Eric Brewer, the team captain, to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Blues acquired the rights to unsigned draft pick Brock Beukeboom, plus a third-round pick in 2011.

• The Toronto Maple Leafs sent defenseman Tomas Kaberle to the Boston Bruins for prospect Joe Colborne and two draft picks. The Bruins gave up their first-round selection in 2011, as well as a conditional second-round pick.
