Shadle Park’s Norman wins State 3A/2A vault
TACOMA – Alana Norman of Shadle Park won the 3A/2A vault with a score of 9.6 and medaled in the other three events at the state gymnastics championships Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.
Norman was fifth in the uneven bars, tied for sixth in the balance beam and tied for 13th in the floor exercise. The top 16 finishers in each 3A/2A event were medalists.
Other area 3A/2A medalists included in the vault: Anandae Egland (fifth) and Davina Carr (tie for sixth) of Lakeside and University’s Cady Markin (15th), Friday’s 3A/2A all-around champion. Other bars medalists: Markin (third), Carr (sixth) and Egland (11th). Other beam medalists: Courtney Bray (tie for third) of Mt. Spokane, Markin and Norman (tied for sixth) and Carr (15th). Other floor medalists: Markin (sixth), Amy House (eighth) of U-Hi, Hailey Barry of Shadle Park and Bray (tie for ninth) and Kaleigh Campbell (16th) of U-Hi.
The top eight won medals in the 4A competition. The lone area medalist in 4A was Cadie Pratt of Mead (fourth in bars and eighth in beam).
All eight individual titles went to gymnasts from schools outside the Seattle area – the first Seattle-area shutout in individual event competition since 1997.
Sophomore Britni Atwell of Heritage of Vancouver picked up 4A first-place medals for the second straight year in vault and floor.
The 3A/2A winners included Danielle Brandon of team champ Kamiakin on beam and Michelle Fletcher of Kamiakin on vault.
