In brief: Fairfield food bank announces hours

FAIRFIELD – The North Palouse Community Food Bank in Fairfield has announced its hours for January and February. It will be open from 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 8 and 22 and Feb. 12 and 26. It will also be open from 4 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 13 and Feb. 17.

The food bank is supported entirely by community donations and serves Fairfield, Rockford, Latah and Waverly. It is located behind the Fairfield Fire Station on North Railroad Street. Those with emergency food needs can call (509) 279-0842.

Meridian wins construction bid

SPOKANE VALLEY – Spokane Valley Fire Department commissioners voted this week to award a $3.7 million contract to Meridian Construction to build a new administration building and repair the department’s training tower. Construction is expected to be complete by April 2012.

In response to a recent fire at Station 6 caused by a malfunctioning dishwasher that was under recall, the department checked its inventory of dishwashers at other stations and found two more of the same model. The dishwashers have since been repaired.

CV school bond rally planned

Citizens supporting the Central Valley School bond on the ballot next month will hold a kick-off rally Thursday.

The Vote Yes for Central Valley Schools campaign will be officially kicked off at 6:30 p.m. at CenterPlace, 2426 N. Discovery Place.

The event will provide information about the construction bond and participants will prepare personalized postcards.

The district will have a $69.6 million construction bond on the ballot Feb. 8. The bond will expand and modernize Evergreen Middle School, Opportunity, Ponderosa, Greenacres and Chester elementary schools, build a new elementary school and improve security in all buildings.
