Standish hits career high in GU win

Junior Kayla Standish scored a career-high 27 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds Thursday to lead Gonzaga (14-4, 2-0) to an 80-61 West Coast Conference women’s basketball win over Pepperdine at Malibu, Calif.

Standish hit 11 of 16 from the field to eclipse her previous high, set last year against North Dakota. She was 7 of 10 from the floor in the first half, when the Zags shot 70 percent (21 of 30).

GU made its first seven field goals to seize a 15-4 advantage. A 14-2 run midway through the half pushed the advantage to 29-11.

Katelan Redmon scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half for the Bulldogs.

Jazmine Jackson scored 18 points for the Waves (10-6, 1-2).

• Brianne Ryan scored a game-high 21 points, hitting 9 of 15 from the floor, to lead Eastern Washington (6-8, 2-0) to an 88-72 win over Sacramento State (3-13, 0-3) at Sacramento, Calif.

Julie Piper added 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Chene Cooper had 15 points, six assists and four steals for the Eagles. Tatjana Sparavalo came off the Eagles’ bench for 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Sami Field-Polisso scored 17 points for the Hornets, hitting 5 of 8 on 3-pointers.

• Keri Arendse scored 13 points and Bianca Cheever hit 4 of 6 3-pointers on the way to 12 points as Idaho (9-6, 2-1 Western Athletic Conference) picked up the 500th win in program history with a 72-48 decision over visiting Hawaii (6-10, 0-2) at Cowan Spectrum.

Derisa Taleni added 11 points and five assists for the Vandals, and freshman Alyssa Charlston had 10 points and eight rebounds.

• Tugce Canitez led four players in double figures with 18 points and added 10 rebounds as host North Idaho (16-2, 2-2 SWAC) beat Eastern Utah 80-52 for its sixth consecutive win.

Camille Reynolds added 16 points and Deanna Dotts 12 rebounds for the Cardinals, who built a 34-point second-half lead. Bruna Deichmann led the Golden Eagles (7-10, 2-2) with 21 points.

Men’s basketball

Nick Fromm led five players in double figures with 15 points, hitting 7 of 13 from the field, as North Idaho (16-3, 1-3 Scenic West Athletic Conference) improved to 11-0 at home with an 87-52 win over Eastern Utah (14-4, 2-2).

Michael Hale III added 14 points, Petar Joksimoic 13, Tyrone White 12 and Anthony Diloreto 11 for the Cardinals. Diloreto, Fromm and White combined for 27 rebounds.

The Cardinals shot 50 percent from the floor, including 10 of 24 on 3-pointers.

Cameron Evans scored 13 points and Jonathan Mills had 12 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, who shot 20 of 63 from the field.

Wrestling

Jake Mason’s pin at 165 pounds put North Idaho (9-1) ahead for good during a 26-11 win over host Highline (4-2) at Des Moines, Wash.

The Cardinals trailed 11-7 after Eric Jones’ 12-10 sudden-victory win over Jeremy Bommariot at 157.

NIC closed out the night with decisions by Jesse Nielsen (174), Jamelle Jones (197) and Matthew Foxworthy (285), and Justin Korthius’ 16-6 major decision at 184.

Junior hockey

Rance Hughes scored three goals to give him a team-high 21 Thursday as the Spokane Braves (18-20-1-2) edged the Grand Forks Border Bruins 4-3 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play at Grand Forks, British Columbia. The Border Bruins are 7-31-0-1.
