In brief: Home invader was after meth

From Staff Reports

One of two suspects in a home-invasion robbery in which a woman was shot with pellets told police he intended to steal 2 ounces of methamphetamine, according to court documents filed Monday.

Bradley Bain Cooper, 36, is jailed on $250,000 bond after appearing in Superior Court on a first-degree burglary charge. He was arrested with a BB gun after an officer spotted him running from 11309 E. 40th Ave., just after the robbery was reported at 12:34 a.m. Sunday.

The victim, Tammi L. Putnam, was shot in each leg and lost a tooth during the altercation. The men fled empty-handed. The woman was treated at a hospital.

“She told officers she had no idea what the suspects were looking for, but that she did occasionally provide housing to people who use controlled substances,” according to a news release by Sgt. Dave Reagan.

Cooper, a repeat offender with several felony convictions, told police his friend, whose name has not been released, shot the woman.

SCRAPS ending after-hours drops

Starting Thursday, the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service won’t allow people to drop off animals after hours.

An unattended room with a half-dozen cages now will be locked when the shelter at 2521 N. Flora Road is closed. However, the shelter will no longer be closed on Wednesdays.

Director Nancy Hill said the SCRAPS shelter is the last in the county to prohibit unattended delivery of animals.

She said people failed to fill out required forms 45 percent of the time when they left animals after hours, depriving the shelter of information needed for rabies investigations.

The shelter also was deprived of fees it would have sought, and often wound up providing free service to residents of cities and counties that don’t contribute to SCRAPS, Hill said.

Last year, SCRAPS received 1,969 animals after hours, 1,306 of which were cats.

The cash-strapped shelter now will be open noon to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Drum group cancels Fox show

Kodo, the Japanese drum group, has canceled its Wednesday performance at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox.

The group ran into delays in shipping its massive taiko drums from Japan and can’t guarantee the drums will arrive in Spokane in time.

The Spokane date was intended as the opening performance of its North American tour. Now the tour will open in Vancouver, B.C., on Friday.

More than 1,000 tickets were sold for the Spokane performance.

Tickets purchased online, by phone or at the Fox box office with a credit card will automatically be refunded this week.

Tickets buyers who purchased at the Fox with cash or checks can get a refund in person at the box office, 1001 W. Sprague Ave.

Buyers who bought tickets in person at TicketsWest outlets must return their tickets to the Arena Box Office, 720 W. Mallon Ave., Spokane 99201. Include contact information if sending by mail.
