Your week

YOUR HEALTH

So it’s the end of January, and your New Year’s resolutions aren’t looking so hot? Here are tips from counselors to get back on track:

• Don’t beat yourself up. Accept that it’s OK to make mistakes, and don’t expect perfection.

• Think about why you slipped. Find your “red flags” and work to avoid them.

• If your goals feel overwhelming, set smaller targets. Want to stop eating fast food? Reduce your weekly trips by one day at a time – not all at once.

• Get support. Admit to family and friends that you’re struggling and ask for help. Also look into online support groups.

YOUR HOME

The makings for a whole new wardrobe could be waiting right in your own closet.

“Little Green Dresses,” by designer Tina Sparkles (Taunton Press, $22.95), shows how to do your part for the Earth by restyling old clothing – as well as blankets, tablecloths and other fabric items – into fresh, fun new designs.

The book contains 50 patterns for dresses, tops, skirts and other garments. Each is assigned skill levels in pattern-making and sewing, so you can pick projects that match your abilities.

YOUR FOOD

Minestrone might not quite translate to “kitchen sink,” but the Italian soup is a good way to use up whatever leftovers you might have on hand. Find the recipe for a version with herbed meatballs on page C5.
