Local briefs: Former Chiefs player hired by Fayetteville
Sean Gillam, who played for the Spokane Chiefs from 1992-96, has been named the new coach of the Fayetteville (Ark.) FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League.
Gillam, 35, was a third-round draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 draft and played 11 seasons in the minor leagues.
He had 40 goals and 142 assists in 281 games with the Chiefs. When Gillam moved on he was the team’s all-time leader in games played.
Baseball
Jarek Cunningham (Mt. Spokane HS) of the Bradenton Marauders was named the Florida State League’s offensive player of the week for the week ending July 3 after hitting .333 with three doubles, three home runs and 10 runs batted in.
Cunningham is an infielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Class A affiliate.
• Gonzaga University’s Marco Gonzales has been named to the Baseball America Freshman All-America first team as a utility player, as selected by the staff of Baseball America. Gonzales started 15 games as a pitcher, 29 as a first baseman and two as a left fielder.
Football
Washington State University sophomore wide receiver Marquess Wilson has been named to the 2011 Fred Biletnikoff Award preseason watch list.
• University of Idaho junior place-kicker Trey Farquhar is on the Lou Groza Award watch list.
Golf
University of Idaho golfers Kayla Mortellaro, Teo Poplawski and Rachel Choi were honored as All-American Scholars by the National Golf Coaches Association after maintaining grade-point averages of 3.5 of better.
Rowing
Marci Robles has been hired as an assistant women’s rowing coach at Gonzaga University. Robles was on GU head coach Glenn Putyrae’s staff at Georgetown University for the past two seasons, prior to her move to Gonzaga.
Swimming
Nicole Proulx has signed a letter of intent to compete for Washington State University. In addition, Kelly Tannhauser has transferred to WSU from South Carolina. Proulx will be a freshman in the fall after competing at Canyon High School in Anaheim Hills, Calif. As a junior, Proulx broke the 33-year-old Century League record in the 100 freestyle. She is a two-time swimming All-American. Tannhauser swam personal bests in the 200 free, 200 back and 200 IM at the 2011 Southeastern Conference Championships as a freshman.
Tennis
Cristobel Ramos Salazar, from Guadalajara, Mexico, has signed to play for the Idaho Vandals men’s tennis team. Salazar was the No. 1 junior tennis player in Mexico in the 12-, 14- and 16-year-old age groups. He was ranked as high as No. 240 in the world in juniors by the International Tennis Federation, and ranked as the No. 52 recruit in 2010 by tennisrecruiting.net.
Volleyball
Mallorie Schoesler, a defensive specialist/libero who played at West Valley HS, has signed to play at Lewis-Clark State College. The 5-5 Schoesler was a four-year starter in volleyball and her team placed no worse than eighth at state all four years, including a third-place finish her senior year. She was an all-league honorable mention selection as a freshman and a first-team pick as a senior.
