In brief: Franchitti wins third IndyCar title in Toronto

Auto Racing: Dario Franchitti survived a crash-filled race to win his third title at the Honda Indy Toronto on Sunday and extend his lead in the IndyCar standings.

The Scot held off Graham Rahal on a late restart and then beat teammate Scott Dixon on the 1.75-mile temporary street course at Exhibition Place. Ryan Hunter-Reay was third and Marco Andretti fourth.

Franchitti leads the standings with 353 points, 55 ahead of Will Power. It was Franchitti’s 30th career win and his fourth this season.

He won the race in 1999 and 2009.

• Alonso wins first race of season: In Silverstone, England, Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso won his first race of the Formula One season at the British Grand Prix, while Sebastian Vettel increased his overall lead by finishing second.

After starting third, Alonso took the lead on lap 28 when he pitted at the same time as Vettel, whose pit crew struggled to attach a wheel.

• Neff gets another Funny Car win: Mike Neff raced to his fourth Funny Car victory of the season at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Joliet, Ill.

With the win, Neff gave Ford its 200th NHRA Funny Car victory as he powered his Ford Mustang to a performance of 4.246 seconds at 293.22 mph to defeat Jeff Arend, who posted a 5.168 at 186.54 in his Funny Car.

Del Worsham (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.

Worsham raced to his fifth victory of the season in Top Fuel.

Spain’s Ferrer beats Fish to close out US

Tennis: In Austin, Texas, Spain’s David Ferrer beat American Mardy Fish 7-5, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-6 (5) to clinch a victory for Spain over the United States in a Davis Cup quarterfinal.

Ferrer, who beat Andy Roddick on Friday night, fell backward when Fish’s final shot sailed wide, then jumped into the arms of Spain captain Albert Costa. The win gave Spain an insurmountable 3-1 lead.

Playing without world No. 2 Rafael Nadal, Spain went 3-0 in singles. Spain will host France in a semifinal Sept. 16-18. Spain is seeking its third Davis Cup championship in four years.

• Top-seeded Isner victorious: In Newport, R.I., top-seeded John Isner has become the first No. 1 seed to win the title in the 35-year history of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, beating sixth-seeded Olivier Rochus, 6-3, 7-6 (6).

The 6-foot-9 Isner used his overpowering serve to beat the 30-year-old Belgian in a contrast of styles. The 5-6 Rochus is the shortest player on the ATP Tour.

• Vinci beats Begu in final of Budapest Grand Prix: Top-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy won her third WTA title of the year by beating Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 Sunday in the final of the Budapest Grand Prix at Budapest, Hungary.

Vinci took a 4-1 lead in the first set but Begu fought back for a 5-4 advantage before Vinci broke again.

Bengals’ Pacman Jones arrested

Football: Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones was arrested in Cincinnati on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct while intoxicated and resisting arrest, adding to the list of off-the-field troubles that have marred his career.

The 27-year-old Jones was jailed around 3 a.m. and released later in the morning. Cincinnati media outlets reported documents filed in court accuse Jones of being disorderly and shouting profanities in a downtown bar and trying to pull away as officers arrested him.

Jones denied the allegations in an interview with WCPO-TV after leaving jail.

• Former Notre Dame, Broncos lineman Duranko dead: Pete Duranko, a star defensive lineman on Notre Dame’s 1966 national championship team who went on to play eight years for the Denver Broncos, died Friday in Windber, Pa., of Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 67.

Duranko had battled amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for a decade.

Blackhawks, Stalberg agree to 2-year deal

Miscellany: The Chicago Blackhawks and forward Viktor Stalberg have agreed on a two-year contract.

Stalberg had 12 goals and 12 assists last season, his first with Chicago after being acquired from Toronto.

• US nabs fifth place in FIBA’s U19 Championships: In Riga, Latvia, Tim Hardaway Jr. of Michigan scored 21 points and Jeremy Lamb of NCAA champion Connecticut tipped in his own miss with 29 seconds to play to give the United States a 78-77 victory over Australia in the fifth-place game of FIBA’s Under 19 World Championships.

• Sparks promote Kobe’s father to coach: The Los Angeles Sparks have dismissed Jennifer Gillom as coach and replaced her with Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, the father of Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant who previously coached the WNBA team.

• Powell wins 100 meters: In Birmingham, England, Asafa Powell overcame a difficult start to win the 100 meters in 9.91 seconds at the Aviva Grand Prix Diamond League meet.

• World Series of Poker top prize beats expectations: The winner at the World Series of Poker main event this year will get $8.71 million, slightly less than last year but more than many players and industry followers expected given recent legal problems for online cardrooms.

Series officials said 6,865 players – 6.2 percent fewer than last year – entered the no-limit Texas Hold ’em tournament in Las Vegas.
