In brief: Augustus, Lynx weather Seattle Storm
WNBA: Seimone Augustus scored 19 points and the Minnesota Lynx took over the game with a 22-2 run and held on to beat the Seattle Storm 69-62 Saturday night in Minneapolis.
Rebekkah Brunson added 16 points for Minnesota (9-4), while Lindsay Whalen scored 13, including four big free throws down the stretch.
Tanisha Wright scored 18 points to lead Seattle (7-6), while Swin Cash had 16 and Sue Bird added 15.
Kirk has one-stroke lead at Viking Classic
Golf: PGA Tour rookie Chris Kirk shot an 8-under-par 64 to take a one-stroke lead going into the final round of the Viking Classic at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss.
Kirk finished at 18 under. Kirk Triplett (former Pullman resident) shot a 2-under 70 and is tied for 18th at 13 under. Alex Prugh (Ferris HS/University of Washington) missed the cut after shooting a 71 in the second round.
• Wagner extends lead, Romo second at Tahoe celeb tourney: Actor Jack Wagner extended his lead with four birdies and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo moved into second at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nev.
Wagner shot a 71 in the second round and Romo shot a 70.
Nets guard Williams signs with Besiktas
Basketball: New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams says on Twitter that he has officially signed with Turkey’s Besiktas.
The All-Star guard has posted a picture of the agreement with Besiktas bearing his signature on his Twitter account.
Burns keeps his title with first-round TKO
Boxing: Ricky Burns of Scotland stopped former champion Nicky Cook of England in the first round to successfully retain his WBO super featherweight title at Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.
Burns floored Cook in the opening seconds, including a hard right to the back. A glancing blow put Cook down again, and though he got to his feet, Cook was struggling. More rights to the body dropped Cook and his corner threw in the towel to end the scheduled 12-rounder after only 1:33.
• Huck KOs Garay: Marco Huck of Germany stopped Hugo Hernan Garay of Argentina in the 10th round to retain his WBO cruiserweight title in Munich.
The end came 1:10 into the 10th when Huck caught Garay with a right to the chin, another right to the side of the head and then landed a huge left to the chin that sent Garay sprawling to the floor.
• Pro boxer, five others charged in brawl: Atlantic City (N.J.) police say a pro boxer from Philadelphia and five other men face charges after they brawled with police and security at a casino where the fighter had won a bout hours earlier.
Sgt. Monica McMenamin says the brawl at Bally’s Atlantic City began around 3:15 a.m., when the men became disorderly and were asked to leave the casino.
Moments later, the boxer – 25-year-old junior middleweight Gabriel Rosado – allegedly punched an officer in the face, splitting his lip.
Rosado was charged with aggravated assault on police and making terroristic threats, and his bail was set at $200,000.
Soderling to face Ferrer in final
Tennis: Robin Soderling of Sweden will play David Ferrer of Spain today in a Swedish Open final in Bastad, Sweden, between former champions.
The fifth-ranked Soderling routed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-0 and the second-seeded Ferrer beat defending champion Nicolas Almagro 6-1, 6-3.
• Ferrero to play Andujar in Mercedes Cup final: Juan Carlos Ferrero rallied past Federico del Bonis of Argentina 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and will play fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar in the final of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany.
Blind Luck hangs on in Delaware
Horse racing: Blind Luck beat rival Havre de Grace by a nose to win the 74th running of the Grade II $750,000 Delaware Handicap in Wilmington, Del.
• Air Support wins 14th Virginia Derby: Air Support took the lead at the 16th pole and won the 14th running of the $600,000 Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs in Providence Forge, Va., holding off Banned by a neck.
Ex-UGA coach accused in scheme
Miscellany: A former University of Georgia football coach has been accused in court documents of making millions of dollars from a Ponzi scheme.
The federal documents filed this week in bankruptcy court in Ohio contend that Jim Donnan and his wife, Mary, attracted investments for GLC Ltd., which filed for bankruptcy in February.
The documents claim the Donnans made commissions for new investments. It claims Donnan invested more than $5.4 million in the company and that his family ultimately made more than $14.5 million.
