In brief: 116 million in China watch Li

Tennis: The WTA says Li Na was watched by 116 million TV viewers in China when she won the country’s first Grand Slam singles title at the French Open.

The 29-year-old Li beat defending champion Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 7-6 (0) on Saturday.

WTA chairman Stacey Allaster says the audience was the biggest for a tennis match in China and is a “fantastic sign for the continued growth potential of women’s tennis in China.”

Schwarzer hired at Medical Lake

Basketball: Carey Schwarzer has been hired as girls basketball coach at Medical Lake High School.

Schwarzer, who played high school basketball as Carey Sauer at Newport, was head coach at Riverside HS this past season.

She set Newport’s career scoring record with 2,102 points and led her team to the State 2A crown as a senior in 1999.

Schwarzer played for the University of San Francisco before playing a few professional seasons in Germany.

“We could not have asked for a stronger candidate to begin building a foundation for our girls program,” Medical Lake athletic director Chris Spring said.
