Released The Green Bay Packers released linebacker A.J. Hawk after the former first-round pick was scheduled to earn $10 million in 2011. Hawk was one of three players the Super Bowl champions let go Wednesday, along with tight end Donald Lee and safety Derrick Martin. Hawk was the fifth overall pick of the 2006 draft, playing in all 80 regular-season games since then with 77 starts.
Transferred Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg added to an impressive list of transfers, announcing that former Michigan State guard Korie Lucious will join the Cyclones. Iowa State said that Lucious, a junior point guard who was suspended by coach Tom Izzo earlier this season for conduct detrimental to the program, had signed a financial aid agreement with the school. Lucious will redshirt next year and use his final year of eligibility in 2012-13.
Arrested Oakland Athletics outfielder Coco Crisp has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, the third major league player to be charged with DUI during spring training. The A’s said in a statement that Crisp was arrested early Wednesday in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was released from jail and arrived at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on time to take part in pregame drills before Oakland’s exhibition against the Cleveland Indians.
Sidelined Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett will miss his next scheduled spring training start today because of concussion symptoms. Beckett was hit on the left temple while shagging balls in the outfield during batting practice Monday. Boston said he has passed tests and been cleared for physical activity.
• Former Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones will have a pin inserted to repair a stress fracture in his foot on Saturday in Charlotte, N.C. Agent Jimmy Sexton said that the injury was discovered two days before the likely first-round draft pick’s scheduled workout at the NFL combine.
Cleared Four months after undergoing surgery on his right knee, New Jersey Devils forward Zach Parise has been cleared to start skating. Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello said Parise was examined by surgeons in Cleveland, and given the approval to skate lightly.
Suspended The soccer player who kicked an injured owl off the field during a match has been suspended for two matches and fined $560 by Colombian soccer officials. Officials handed out the sanctions to Luis Moreno, a defender for Colombian club Deportivo Pereira, who jogged over from his position and kicked the owl after the injured bird landed Sunday in a corner of the field. The owl died of shock 30 hours later despite treatment at a local veterinary clinic.
