A “vivacious lass” named Phoebe Eversole was arrested for masquerading as a man at the Brown Hotel bar.

Women were not allowed in most saloons at the time. An officer noticed what appeared to be an “awkward boy whose dainty hands and pretty face made her identity as a girl a simple matter.”

She was taken to the police station, where she “took exception to the curiosity and impertinent glances of the newspaper representatives in the station at the time.” Reporters said her “chin went up in the air with an expression of disdain.”

Meanwhile, one of her friends upbraided reporters by saying, “It’s bad enough for the police to arrest a poor girl who makes a mistake once and goes out masquerading in men’s clothes, but for them to let a horrid reporter know the facts and publish them in a newspaper is disgraceful.”

She was fined $10. The girl explained to police that she was “only out for a lark.”

She gave her occupation as “hello girl,” meaning telephone switchboard operator.
