Your week

YOUR HEALTH

The summer travel season is almost upon us, along with the increased risk of catching colds and flu while flying.

Here are some tips for staying healthy aloft, from Dr. Mark Gendreau, an air-travel expert and vice chair of emergency medicine at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.:

• Drink lots of water. Nasal membranes – an important barrier against germs – don’t work as well if they dry out, and the air on planes is very low in humidity.

• Use saline nasal spray to help the tiny hairs that line nasal passages expel germs, and keep membranes in the eyes, nose and mouth moist.

• Carry hand sanitizer (at least 60 percent alcohol) and clean your hands frequently, especially before touching your face.

• Wipe down trays and seat handles with alcohol-based sanitizer or an antibacterial wipe.

• Turn the air vent above your seat to medium flow and position it so the current moves just slightly in front of your face, to ward off airborne bugs.

YOUR HOME

High Country Gardens lets you create great-looking container gardens without a bit of artistic ability.

The mail-order nursery is selling 35 professionally designed container gardens that you plant yourself using a diagram. Prices range from $9.99 to $59.99 for plants only, and from $60.16 to $266.66 for complete kits with vessel, potting soil and plant food.

See www.highcountrygardens.com or call (800) 925-9387.

YOUR FOOD

It’s probably not a good idea to drink your dinner, but there’s no reason your ingredients can’t imbibe a bit. Beer is the secret ingredient in the saffron-accented Drunken Chicken and Rice. For the recipe, see page C5.
