YOUR HEALTH

If you think you’re being healthy and saving some calories by ordering salad or oatmeal, think again, says the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

The nonprofit group recently tested the nutritional content of “healthy” fast-food items and found some of them were packed with more fat, sodium, and sugar than anyone should eat in an entire day.

The worst offenders were Wendy’s Baja Salad, with almost twice the recommended amount of daily sodium, and McDonald’s Fruit & Maple Oatmeal, with more calories than a hamburger and more sugar than many candy bars.

Rounding out the top (or bottom) five were Subway Fresh Fit 6-inch Turkey Breast Sub, which has 24 fat grams with cheese and mayo; Sonic’s Strawberry Smoothie, which has more sugar than five Twinkies; and KFC Kentucky Grilled Chicken, which contains PhIP, a chemical classified as a carcinogen by the federal government.

YOUR HOME

Want guests to feel more at home in your home? Add a big round chair or a circular rug or ottoman.

People react more positively to, and prefer to socialize in, spaces filled with curvy forms and shapes, as opposed to rectangles, according to a new study from Oregon State University.

Study participants said curvy rooms made them feel happier, more hopeful, comfortable and relaxed than the sharp-angled rooms.

“Curvilinear forms create warmth,” said Sibel Dazkir, a doctoral student in design and human environment, who conducted the study. “They’re associated with organic forms found in nature.”
