CCS sweeps golf crowns

Community Colleges of Spokane doubled up in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Golf Championships that wound up in the Tri-Cities on Monday.

Both the women and men captured titles in the two-day event at Horn Rapids in Richland and Canyon Lakes in Kennewick.

The women earned their third straight title and seventh in nine years under coach Christie Dalsanders and placed two players on the all-tournament team.

Led by all-tournament players Alexa Bell, who finished second with a 78-83 for 161, and Kelsey Berg, who was fourth with a 77-90 for 167, the Sasaquatch compiled a 36-hole score of 500 for a 13-stroke margin over runner-up Bellevue.

Walla Walla’s Dona Dunovant was the medalist with a 152 (72-80).

Dalsanders was named the NWAACC coach of the year for the second straight year and seventh time in her nine-year tenure.

The CCS men avenged a narrow loss in last year’s championships by fashioning an 18-stroke victory over Bellevue, 592-610.

Former Coeur d’Alene High stars Alex Pounds and Andrew Roller were second and fourth to earn all-tournament honors.

Pounds, earlier named the NWAACC MVP for his play during the regular season, shot a pair of par 72s for 144 and Roller shot 71-76 for 147.

Ash Miles of Walla Walla edged Pounds by a stroke for medal honors with a 143.
