Area girls win championships

Pullman’s Paige Whidbee, Odessa’s Kira Powell and St. John-Endicott’s team all claimed girls championships as state golf tournaments wrapped up Wednesday at several venues.

Whidbee finished two days at Lake Spanaway Golf Course with a 149, five strokes ahead of Steilacoom’s Kim Cherokee in the 2A classification. Whidbee and Cherokee shared the first-round lead with 72s.

Pullman finished fourth with 60 1/2 points, 59 behind champion Bellingham.

Powell, at the 2B/1B event at Meadow Park Golf Course in Lakewood, followed Tuesday’s 86 with an 81 for an eight-shot gap on Riverside Christian’s Joy Attaway and SJE’s Erin Schuster.

Michal Schuster (186) placed eighth to help SJE top the field with 35 1/2 points. Warden (27) placed second.

Girls 1A

Champion Kristen Rue (143) won by six shots at The Home Course in Dupont and led Life Christian Academy to the team title with 76 points. Freeman’s Alyssa Maine placed seventh at 169 and Colville’s Megan Ray was ninth at 176.

Boys 2A

Blaine’s Ryan Wallen finished at 143 at the Classic Golf Course in Spanaway for a seven-shot gap on Andrew Kennedy of Interlake. Kennedy guided the Saints (102 points) to the team title. Clarkston placed fifth with 57 1/2 points, led by Tyler Carlson (158), who tied for 12th.

Boys 1A

Ridgefield’s Brett Johnson finished at 141 at The Home Course in Dupont for a four-shot win over Lynden Christian’s Willy Scholten, who fired a final-round 66. Ilwaco, with three golfers in the top six, won the team title with 155 points. Freeman’s Jess Wingett placed 11th at 154.

Boys 2B/1B

Ryan Baumgart of DeSales captured an eight-stroke win at Meadow Park GC in Lakewood by finishing at 152. Bear Creek School scored 111 points to win the team title by 29 points over Baumgart’s Irish. Casey Brown of Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia finished third at 162. Northwest Christian’s Trevor Magruder (164) placed fifth, Odessa’s Alex Hatten (168) placed eighth and Tyler Stevenson (172) tied for 13th to help Colfax (39 1/2 points) to fifth place.
