Your week

Cirque du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson: THE IMMORTAL World Tour” hits Spokane on Saturday.

YOUR HEALTH

Having the so-called “obesity gene” doesn’t necessarily doom you to being fat, a new study shows – as long as you stay active.

A meta-analysis that surveyed 45 studies of 218,166 adults, reported in the journal PLoS Medicine, looked at the effect physical activity had on being saddled with the FTO gene, associated with fat mass and obesity.

Being physically active reduced obesity risk by an average of 27 percent compared with people who were sedentary. The same effect was not seen in an analysis of nine studies on children and teens.

The bar for “active” was set fairly low. People were deemed inactive if they had a sedentary job and did less than one hour of moderate to vigorous activity per week, or their level of physical activity was in the lowest 20 percent among that group of study participants.

YOUR HOME

Changing flooring requires little more than a whim with Modularity Tiles.

In most residential situations, the vinyl tiles can be installed with a residue-free, double-sided tape. They can be repositioned, and individual tiles can be replaced if they get damaged.

Modularity Tiles come either solid or with die-cut openings where you can insert either a circle or a square – sort of like putting a shape into a frame. You can mix and match designs and colors for a one-of-a-kind look.

The tiles are sold at www.modularitytiles.com. Solid-color, 12-inch-square tiles cost $2.05 each; tile frames, $1.73 each; and inserts, $1.72 each. Shipping is extra.
